thinking about buying a '99 psd with an auto tranny in it. I want to put a chip in it, but am concerned about the automatic tranny holding up. Does anyone have any info onto what kind of torque a stock ford automatic transmisssion can withstand? Any info is appreciated.

Um... well if it's the same tranny and the 96 and 97 models it ia pretty much bulletproof. I have towed loads up to about 20,000 with the two I have owned. The only weak point is they are stock with brass planetaries. if you ever need to rebuild it have them use stainless steel... the tranny will outlivbe the rest of the truck including the awesome powerstroke in front of it.

I chipped the F250 at 60K miles and replaced the tranny at 83K due to the second gear going out. In 01 I was the third owner at 40K miles so who knows what was done to it. The truck also tows some weight.

Keeping your truck stock will prolong the life of the tranny for sure.

In My 96 this will be tranny #3.....first on left me at 100k, and not 28k later this tranny is having terminal problems....Think that it is due to the fact that the company that rebuild it didnt listen to what I wanted....This tranny gave me problems since day one....I have modded the truck since the first tranny but none of the mods have been that big on power to wipe out the tranny...... Anyways....they (Automatic Transmission Exchange) will not help me out. It's only been less than 2 years since they put the tranny in.....But thier warrenty is only of 1 year( must have been in the super fine print)....I have found a new build tranny for $1600 complete with converter, and steel planteries....So if the truck needs a tranny they are not hard to find, just becareful where you go.....

I think the might have changed the trannys in 99 b/c of the intercooler....more power thing....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

The 99's have the 4R100 trans. It has many updates compared to the earlier E4OD. But neither of these are bullit proof in stock form by any means. The E4OD is notoriously weak behind a PSD, because Ford used aluminum planetary cages as well as too few planet gears in each cage. A poorly designed center bearing support, and poor lubrication to the OD planetary. Poor pump flow, and an aluminum tail housing on 4x4 models among other weak links. I am on my 5th rebuild in 180,000 mi. The stock torque converters are also a weak link, but the 4R100 t/c is better. Get a 24,000# gvw rated trans cooler or a Ford v-10 cooler. After beating up this trans (E4OD,4R100) like I just did, I will acknowledge it can be rebuilt with the right aftermarket parts into a truely bullit proof trans. But there are only a few shops in the whole country that can do the job.

As of today my Ford rebuilt tranny has 90K miles on it. The 00 Excursion psd has 126K miles on the original tranny.

BTS in Arkansas can make you a bullet proof tranny but plan to dish out $4K with shipping for one with a full two year warranty.

Suncoast also whips up pretty good tranny's.

I have a '96 F450, with auto tranny, 200,000 miles, and the
transmission has been rebuilt once.. My truck is a highly
modified one, with 380 hp and over 700 ftlb torque, so the transmission
can handle that much ok.. I have the Banks Transcommand gizmo
installed...

Would the it be better to look for a 4R100 to replace my E4OD??

I would like to have a better tranny but in kinda low on the $$$....

Why don't you call SunCoast and see what they have? It wouldn't hurt to ask.... Heck, they might just have a 4R100 just sitt'n around.

My 2001 F250 had the 4R100 and just a little extra, maybe 30 HP, was killing it. I modded the trans to hold ... but only 330 HP or so. Ggg6 hit the nail on the head...... those trannies over heat pretty bad. Whatever power you add...get the cooler. 300 HP is about the limmit without doing some good upgrades to that trans.

The 4R100 is a direct bolt up for the E4OD, but there are some differences in the electronics that need to be addressed like t/c lockup, solenoid packs, etc. Edited by: Ggg6
