Hey guys, this is my first post. But wanted to let you all know about the GM XM radio kit that will hook up to a factory radio out of a 03-05 Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban. The part number for the kit is #12498768. It comes complete with everything you need. I am a GM dealer Parts Manager and was talking with my district rep and he said that it is a very good setup. Check it out! I already have a couple of them on order.

Any chance you could post some install instructions when you get them? Thanks

Does it give all the functionality of the steering wheel controls unlike the other add on kits? Also, what about the display?

According to my District Manager, he said that you would still be able to use your steering wheel controls with this system. The radio would display everything just like a factory system. The Service Manager here ordered one for his Tahoe. I will try to give you some feedback after I see it installed and mess around with it.

Thanks

Ditto that. I would love to get one of these hooked up. XM is pretty cool.

Is gmpartsdirect.com the best pricing?

JP Customs has it too but it's $399

They have a nav unit that replaces the factory radio but it's big bucks $2200 http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

I just got 2 kits in, opened them up and checked them out, includes all factory parts needed to install XM radio, comes with nice instructions, a template for mounting the OEM antenna, and all wiring needed. Looks to be a very nice unit. Also includes instructions on how to activate the XM using your factory radio. All in all, appears to be a quality kit, havent installed one yet, but would be willing to sell the first one at a discount if the purchaser would be willing to offer a full review of the product, PM me for that. I will post when that offer expires. It appears that for me to sell these and make a few pennies and still be competitive with gmpartsdirect, I have will be pricing these at 340.00 plus shipping.

I just purchased a Roady 2. Purchased a PIE adaptor from jp customs and a bracket from bracketron. Works great. ANd when I am in the house I can bring it inside. Cost 129.00 for Roady, 35.00 for bracket and 100.00 for PIE. I realize that this is only some what part of this topic, however I am just offering an allternative. 10.00 a month and I can use it in the car and the house. I can send pictures if anyone needs them.

homehandyman,

Your XM Roady-2 setup sounds nice http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif. I've been thinking about one too ... the portable feature of the Roady-2 is a nice benefit. Could you give us some more details about your install? ... i.e. does the PIE adapter allow you to connect the audio output of the Roady-2 directly to the OE head unit instead of using the FM modulator. Also how did you mount your Roady and antenna? Could you post some pics? Thanks!

I currently have the commander, but like the idea of incorporating the XM back into the factory components, or at least something that can be used with steering wheel controls. Only thing I didnt like about the Roady is the display is bigger then I liked..

Eric,

I agree the OEM install is the best... I have an OEM XM in my Impala and it's great. I'm just thinking that if I pay for another XM subscription it would be nice to have it portable. I also believe the new Roady-2 is smaller than the original Roady.

Bill, agree with that totally... Nice to see the new Roady is smaller.. Thats the reason I went with the Commander, its smaller then the Attitude...

The unit I purchased from JP Customs is the AUX Inputs 2003-up (SKU# AAI-GM24). I wanted to listen to my Ipod through my stereo without a modulator. It plugs into the back of the car stereo. It allows for two seprate RCA hook ups. I now have my Ipod on one and my Roady 2 on the other. I plug directly into the unit. The volume and swith source still works from the steering wheel. To change the xm station I have to do it from the unit. Also to change my Ipod I do it from the unit. My stereo is not the bose. It is a single CD, AM-FM stereo. The bracket I purchased is the Bracketron Part Number: CHE-201-99. My Truck is a 2003 crewcab. I do not know how to post pictures however I can send you some.

I also have the roady 2 also.2 things I dont like 1. THE ANTENNA, and 2.woud like to be able to use the steering wheel controls, and the factory display on the radio.JUST MY OPINION

homehandyman
08-18-2004, 10:36 PM
I agree that there are possitives and negatives with this set up. The other reason I enjoy the Roady is because I get terrible radio reception in my house. With this I now have 120 radio staions to choose from.

On another note I am hooked on XM. I always thouught that there would be know way I would pay for radio reception. Boy was I wrong. Last week I went to Las Vegas. I listened to the whole NASCAR race with out losing the signal on the way home. I have yet to switch over to my regular radio again.

I hope this opiniion helps. I am not trying to cast my believes on anyone else. Just telling what works for me and why I like my set up.

Took my truck in for service today & asked about the GM XM kit . . . was quoted $400 for the kit & about 4 - 5 hours for the install . . . told me they would do it all for $600; Thanks but no thanks . . . I'd love to have XM, and as Eric said, like the idea of incorporating the XM into the factory components, or at least something that can be used with steering wheel controls, but not for $600!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

I got the ROADY last year at Xmas time.

Free Home Kit and car adapter for $119.00 at Circuit City

I wish it had the FM transmitter built in............as the cassette adapter is bulky but gives good sound.

I was going to get the PIE adapter for my 2002 but may be swapping out radio's.

I would like to know if the stock GM antenna is compatible with the ROADY antenna inputs......

Anyone know ???????

homehandyman,

Thanks for posting the details of your install... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Looks Good!

One more question.. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif Where is your Antenna mounted?

I put my anntena on the front. The anntenna it self is very small. I ran the wire along the window trim and then into the engine area. I then have it going through the firewall at a gromet that goes through. I also ran my air horn wires through the same spot into the cab.

homehandyman
08-19-2004, 10:42 AM
Forgot to say that the annetenna is magnetic. Sticks real well. Have thought about running through the rear cab brake light but I can not even tell that it is there on the front.

Is the antenna included the dual unit which houses both XM and On-Star or could you use this one?

what about us lackies that have the crappy am/fm no cd player radio? I have put in a cd player but going back to stock would take all of ten minutes since the stock harness is unmolested. Edited by: Wickedsprint

You would have to go to JP Customs and see if the plug in module will work with your stereo.

Can anybody tell me what the quality of sound is from XM? I've never personally heard one but I was told it is marginal, less than radio quality

thanks

I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these kits but I'm not real familiar with XM hardware. I don’t want to drill any holes in the roof of my truck. Anyone have any recommendations for an antenna or better yet any pics of your install? thanks!

Oh come on it will be fun. I have mine on order and I can't wait to get the drill out. It is easier to take knowing that it is an oem spec installation. I don't want to be messing with magnets and crap.

Hey guys, can't believe what t.p.n. got quoted for labor on this system. It says it is 1.5 hour install. Service Manager here just put his in his Tahoe over the weekend. He said the next he could easily do in an hour. The instructions come with a very nice template for drilling the holes, so I wouldn't let that bother any of you.

Haven't you ever seen a Silverado that had the one from the factory? It is basicly mounted in the exact same place as the On-Star antenna but on the oposite side. It is just this little black plastic chubby shark fin looking thing. From what I understand this add on mounts in the exact same place but I think the antenna is even lower profile than the original.

I have been running an xm radio for two years or so now...and I can tell you the sound quality is not as good as stereo or cd....when I turn mine off to listen to the radio it about blows the speakers because the sound coming from the radio is so much louder than that coming from the xm. Which being a talk radio and news radio listener it is not a huge deal..but if you want to crank it up...it isnt going to happen.

I have the XM Commander mounted in the overhead storage slot...it comes with an adapter panel that fits perfectly...it took them 1 hour and 15 min. to install (I waited). Looks like it was made to be there http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Antenna is about the size of a silver dollar and is mounted just above the windshield in the middle.

Well I already have my XM radio upgrade on the way from GM Parts Direct for $333 but I just found it at Todey Chevrolet for only $278. I hate it when I find out I got a bad deal. GM Part Direct calls it a special order too so I can't return it. Here is the deal.
