My truck has 6200 miles on it now, and just completed the seconed oil change. I use Rotella 15-40 and delco filters. My question is that after both of the oil changes I notice a oil smell, perhaps burning, but don't know? It seems to go away after a while. Has anyone noticed this and what is it? I have no leaks where it would be burning. Is it coming from the exhaust or what? Input is welcome http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

thats very typical for some oils, I notice it more so on Rotella. Its just the smell it has, nothign to worry about.

I put about 40k on my last max useing Valvoline Blue Max. I switched to Shell Rotella synthetic then. I noticed the smell as well. Before that I did not realize their was a synthetic diesel oil. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

Chevron Delo 400 smells for the first 500 miles or so. With Delvac1, noticed no smell.

I have added a small extension to the crankcase breather tube to vent the fumes below the truck. Seems to help some.

Agreed... Got the same smell with Rotella, seems to be normal for it to smell for a while after an oil change. However, the Delvac 1300 didn't seem to put out any "fumes" on my last oil change. No biggie..

I've been using Chevron Delo for a good while now cause WalMart always seems to have gallons on the shelf when I get there. No smell at all.

I was talking to the regional distribution the other day about this issue and they say they know nothing of the smellhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif But when I told them that I have used Canadian Tire Corp name brand oil and got no smell they said they are the supplier to CTChttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif.When I questioned further found out the oil is made to CTC spec's,I guess ctc spec is no smellhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifAlso they said it is not uncommon to use a little oil in the first change when switching over to rotella.I have used rotella in my excavator with the same results "stinks",just used the last of 2, 5 gallon pails 10w40 semi synthetic and 15w40 reg won't be getting anymore

try Schaeffers, no smell.. less then 15 bucks a gallon.. semi-synthetic that out performs Delvac in many tests. Mike Tomac and myself are going to use it.

Hey guys, how long does the smell last? I'll be changing my oil for the first time soon and have the Rotella T sitting in the garage. Now I'm thinking about taking it back and getting something else.

I don't think it ever really goes away totally. Can see no reason to use a product that you know stinks when you can use others that don't, unless you like what smells like oil burning on the manifold http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Throw Up.gifHow's that answer Crew Cab Dude

I ran the Rotella synthetic on my last max. I would agree the smell is not very noticeable after a few hundred miles. no biggie. It was a good product. I just cant get it here any more. walley world quit carrying it. At $18.88 a gallon I passed on it but when the put it at $12.88 a gallon I thought it was a bargain. My only regret... I didn't buy more. I have ordered Delvac 1 for the new max at $25 a gallon delivered. Local distributors were only about .25 cents chaeper per gallon after tax. If this stuff works 1/2 as good as the Mobil 1 products I have used I will be verypleased with it.

What timing! I just changed my oil this weekend for the third time and now notice the smell when I get out of the vehicle. At first, I thought it smelled like rear differential fluid, which I had recently changed. After inspecting everthing underneath last night, there were no leaky fluids anywhere. For some reason, I did not notice the smell after the first two changes. I'm glad to hear this is not a problem!

I thought I was the only one who smelled the oil when I did the first change to Rotella. Glad it's not only me.

My neighbor was telling me he liked the Shell Rotella in his wrecker and in his motorhome, but didn't care for the smell. He told me that he thought because both of those engines had external breathers, that I wouldn't have a problem running it in my DMax. So I got 3 gallons from him for my first change. Maybe it's because I have so many sinus problems, but I don't smell anything bad after my first oil change. I've got almost 5000 miles on that oil change now and I still don't smell it. Diesel fumes yes, but no stinch that I can relate to the oil I'm using.

I use Castrol 15w-40 and get the smell every time I change for about 500 miles and then it goes away. I check the oil level every fill-up and it's never low so I figure everything is okay.

mine stinks with Rotella also, i thought it was just the rag that had some rotella oil on it that i wiped the bottom of the pan with and was buring off, apparently this happens every time????? well i feel better, tohught i was loosing my mind (well probably am anyway...)

I have the same thing with my truck. I also use rotella and have found the problem so I think. My truck has skid plates on it. When I change the oil I dont take the skid plates off and some oil always gets on the skid plate. It takes a while to burn off. I bought a new drain plug wich alows me to drain the oil through a tube and makes no mess. After changing the oil with the new drain plug I have no burning oil smell.

On the '04 they changed the configuration of the skid plate a bit and put the oil drain plug on the side of the lower pan http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif It should makes things a bit cleaner.

Yeah.....I forgot what a PITA the skidplate is on my 03.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I really need to notch that damn thinghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

I was going to post in regards to Eric's post that I changed to Schaffers and noticed a smell after the change but that could be all the used oil that is now again covering my skidplate now that I think about ithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

I have not got around to notching my skidplate but what I do is wedge a rag crossways between the skidplate and oil pan. After changing oil just remove rag , mess gone

I take a 1 gallon milk jug and cut off the lower half at a angle leaving the handle on. I can then wedge this portion between the oil pan and skid plate and drain the oil without worrying about oil on the skid plate. Works like a charm and just throw the homemade funnel away after every use. I also use Rotella T and have not noticed any abnormal smell. I also use Rotella in all the farm equipment and all diesels I have to deal with.
