Hello!this site rockshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I am a newby, so please forgive my ignorance. I've recently "inherited" an 82 chev k10 6.2 that I grew up with and love. However, it has a small problem I'ld like to correct. The glow plug (plugs are fairly new 1 yr ago ish) controller? relay? does not stop "popping on" after truck is started and must be disconnected manually. Am told the relay? was replaced but to no avail....problem still exists!ANY info/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks! and Cheers!

The glow plug controller operates by using heaters to heat bi-metal strips to open and close contacts. I have seen what you described as a result of the alternator not putting out enough voltage for the heaters to work correctly. First verify that your alternator is operating correctly.
The glow plug circuit never did work very well in these trucks. Most people have replaced them with manual systems which are nothing more then a push button switch and a piece of wire. There are a lot of posts about how to do this on this site. I will leave it up to you to do that search.

Thank you very much for your response! I've re-visited past postings and very much dig the idea of using a push-button switch. Maybe a floor mount headlight dimmer switch that can handle the current would be cool.
I had the alternator tested locally, and is fine (great suggestion!) Thanks again for replying! Cheers!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Now I can move onward to the smaller issues that simply improve overall performance of a great engine and very fun truck........!

Having a head light dimmer switch on the floor might be "cool" but is is a sure way to burn up your glow plugs. You want a momentary normally open push button. You also want it mounted where it CAN NOT be pushed unless you really want the glow plugs on.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif hmmmm....good point! momentary sounds safer. The plugs do cycle on and off ok...... They just don't stop cycling on...off...on...etc. I've been manually
disconnecting the relay (between "on" cycles of course!) by literally pulling the connecter off of the relay after starting, and a few on/off cycles after it starts. I think I'll take your advice and use a momentary "open" switch on the circuit of the relay, and simply hold it in and let it go when started. Is it ok/good for the plugs to come on a couple of times after engine is started? That's what it did before (when truck was new) this problem developoed. Thanks again for your kind replies! This forum is worth a thousand "Chilton's"!!!! Cheers!

You don't need a heavy duty headlight dimmer switch. You just need a switch to activate the glow plug relay or solenoid that puts power to the glow plugs.
