hey guys, what is a good blend to be running in the winter. should i mix in a couple gallons of #1 to decrease my chances of gelling? i know most places have a winter grade but apparently that wasnt enough. how much #1 can i run in my truck?? thanks

The more #1 you run, the worse your mileage is goign to be, and the crappier your engine is going to run. Where are you located? How cold does it get? Where're you buying your diesel? If necessary, your best option to prevent gelling is an additave like Power Service, or one of many others.

x2. Power Service, Stanadyne, etc. winter additives are what you are looking for.

Winter blend already has #1 fuel in it from what I understand;)

Some places have #1, #2 blend othes have "artic" which has a additive in it. I would stay away from #1 - crap mileage, low power and dry. I have ran straight #1 when it got to -30 before but used artic for awhile. I switched to power service this year and have had bad luck.

Here is what i have been told by some very good sources in the fuel industry here in upsate n.y the ULSD isnt going to be blended mainly because the government wasnt shall i say on there game.. there isnt any ULSD KEROSNE avaliable and if there is it is in very limited volumes, with that said we here in the northeast with TT fleets are on pins and needs with the cold weather coming this week, our current additives should get us the 15 degrees but below that it isnt looking good.........

wonder if that is what happened out here. the ulsd wasn't blended for winter. i saw lots of guy on the side of the road and at the truck stops who geled

More than likely that is whats happening, never the less it is going to be very important to watch the temps in the next few months, i have found that dmax does pretty well with cold temp but the truck will only be as good as the fuel in the tank.....

ive never had a problem with this truck in cold temps. when i first bought it the dealer told me not to plug it in and it was -25 ambient temp out. i thought they were crazy but that damn thing started just chugged a little. but that was two years ago when it was the lsd. i just talked to my dad (he is a truck driver) and he said they just got a winter blend 2 weeks ago. sounds like the companies dropped the ball for this winter. anyways i guess lesson learned, still think its bull **** that they dont have the winter blend out.

I have just drove from Las Vegas through Arizona, New Mexico,Texas, and Oklahoma. I observed one thing. While the temperatures were encountered only down to 19F, I observed at least 2 dozen big trucks, stalled out by the side of the road with fuel problems...numbers like this had been observed in the past when the temperatures were minus 15 to minus 20 F.
A word of advice...buy and use fuel antigel additives...it is cheap insurance! The new fuel is NOT being blended likeit used to be!

what additive were you using. ive heard of alot of gelling with power service. Also I would definately not mix #1 with #2, maybe try running proven additives like stanadyne or fppf or stacking a second additive with what you are using now.

ive always used howes, never had a problem. i decided to try amsoils cold flow improver. thats what i had in my tank when it gelled. ive been talking to amsoil over the phone and email and were figuring out why it happened. ill post our findings when we figure it out.
