I have a 95 GMC short bed ex. cab and upon noticeing my tail pipe hanging down I discovered that there is a catilytic converter on it.Does anyone Know why that is on a diesel?? Is it possible to remove it and put an oversived pipe on for better performance? Any exhaust ideas would be helpfull. Thanks

The cat is a point of restriction. Depending upon your state, will be dependant upon what it is you want to do with it. Some states are tough on inspections and emisions. Others aren't too bad. During inspection, if they see no cat, they might not like that. Lots of people straight pipe from turbo right on out to tail pipe. No muffler, no nuttin'. It's not too loud either.
The cat does have some emision function. I noticed a change in the smell of my exhaust once I "modified" mine. The shell of the cat is there, but it's a lot lighter on the inside. But they do get soot in them and plug up over time, depending upon your driving style, and how clean your engine is running. If you remove your cat, you will notice an improvement in how the turbo spools up, and engine performance.

pull the cat and muffler off and straight pipe it all the way, unless your state has emission laws. then i would put a section of pipe where the cat is with clamps, then you can take it out and put the cat back in when you get it checked.

Even better is to run the new pipe throuh the cat so it looks like it's in the original configuration.
