My water in fuel message came up for about 20 seconds the other day and went right out. I am sitting at 21,000 miles. I have called several dealers in town and got a different story from them all. Everything from don't worry about it, to replace the fuel filter, to get it in here quick so we can drain your fuel tank and charge you a bunch of cash. Anyone have any thoughts and should there be any worries?

David,

It's not uncommon for these WIF sensors to give false readings. I would just drain the fuel filter to be sure there is no water. First open the black plastic bleeder screw on top of the filter housing then open the drain on the bottom. After draining the fuel, close the drain and use the hand pump to bleed air from the filter. Close the bleeder and press the pump several times until hard then start the truck. Also when was the last time your fuel filter was changed? Depending on how long it's been you may just want to change the filter and check for water.

First, how long has it been since you last replaced the filter? It should be changed every 10K. You could just open the water drain on the filter and see how much water you get out of it. If it has been over 10K since your last filter replacement, then replace the filter.

David,

I recently had a similar problem except the message appeared every few miles. The dealer replaced the "Water in Fuel" sensor this morning, and it appears to have resolved the problem. Take a fuel sample from the filter a couple of times. If there is no water, then it is most likely a faulty sensor. Most of the notes I read indicate that it takes a lot of water before getting a valid WIF message.

All the boring details of my case are in this thread.
