Hi guys, definite lurker here:) Right now I have an 89 1ton gmc with a 454 in it and it really just doesn't do it for me towing, not to mention at the pump:eek:

Anyway, hoping to get a diesel in the next year or two(wife permitting) and been poking around trying to figure out what I want to get and what to do to it when I get it. Mostly trying to figure reliability of some years vs others, definitely want a duramax/ally combo, need something that is a good jump up in torque from what I have now.

Tow a 30' trailer a few times a year, plus I haul pretty hard with my truck, not scared to throw 4000-5000 lbs in it(dana 70 don't fail me now). Trailer is about 8K loaded plus a ton or more in the bed and man does my truck dog going up into the mountains. Anyway, great site I've already learned a ton poking around in the posts.

Thanks for the welcome, yeah if it wasn't for convincing the wife I'd already have one, definitely gonna buy used, prob as soon as her minivan is paid off. I'd like to keep it under 15K if possible maybe up to 20K, so I know I'm looking at the first gen trucks pricewise. I really don't rack up many miles on my truck, i put 4k on it last year. So if I could find something in the mid 100k's it'd be perfect for me. Guess I figure i'll start lookin early so I know a good deal when i see it. That "honey i just can't pass this up" deal :) Guess I'll have to buy her that hot tub she wants first.....

My mom always tells my dad when he wants something that she doesn't much care for him to have, "remember who you think your going to be sleeping with tonight!":) So... maybe a dozen roses would help when you go to ask her!!!! anyways... goodluck!!! Just tell her, you can drive it whenever you want, (just make sure you get an extra copy of the keys!!)

I had to convince my husband to buy a new diesel instead of used one. He figured we wouldn't be able to buy a new one but after 2 months of searching and figuring the used one we need to pull our rig was more used than new. We ended up with a work truck not a lot of extras but it had what we needed. We roll up the windows and lock the doors our selves and now we are safe and we can stop so much faster when we need to and we can get out of the way when we need to. We are pulling our Home so we never need to pack to go anywhere. Marie

I think new is out of my price range, but maybe my wife will talk me into it as well:) I'd think about buying sooner if I went with an older 6.5L turbo, but my needs are at least 500 ft/lbs to really have it be a worthwhile upgrade, not sure how doable that is with a 6.5 or how much it would cost.

I don't know when they put the Tow-Haul in the D/M but that is what you want to get if it comes in an older truck then get that. We found that when you buy used that they have all the bells and whistles so they cost more used. Could not find a used work truck I guess the people who buy them use them and keep them a long time. I wish you luck in finding what you need. Every one should have one of these great trucks to enjoy. It will make the road a lot safer out there for all of us and help bring down the price of diesel at the pump the more the merrier. Marie

Thanks Marie, stuff like that is exactly what i'm looking for, will research when tow/haul became available. Kinda makes ya feel good that not a lot of people are looking to ditch their duramax trucks, must be on to something good:) Guess I'll have to be patient.
