: Advise on Allison fluid..

I really would like to get some advise on how to handle this.
I do love this truck and the folks at my dealer are nice. But, only after I purchased it did I learn that it is a early 06' with the LLY and that it had been sitting at the dealer's for almost a year. You couldn't tell it by looking at the turck and there are no problems with it.
Now, I have already changed all the fluids (engine, both diffs) and the spin on filtr for the Allison. I go to my dealer's parts guy and ask for a quart of Dex VI. He says "there is no Dex VI, we have Dex III and V that we use in the Fords". (This dealership also sells fords). I said there is no such thingn as Dex V and I guess that ticked him off. We didn't get along too well after that.
I did go to the service mgr. and had a conversation with her. I insisted she call this company's other dealership in a nearby town and ask about the Dex VI. They were well aware of it and I ended up going there for the quart I needed.
Long winded and now for the question.
I'm not too comfortable now knowing that it is possible someone at the dealership topped off the trans with Dex III and would like to change it to new fluid.
I'm going to one of the Allsion Service centers near Atl. and pick up some spin on filters and wonder if I shouldn't just go ahead and get them to change over to the Transynd?
With my past experience in heavy industrial gearboxes and machines where I changed most over to synthetics, I know what a difference it made with them. Things just run cooler and with less amperage after changing over to synthetics. I've always changed my vehicles to synthetics as soon as possible.
Sorry for the long winded post but would appreciate any advise. I know about the "hoot" method for changing the fluid but just don't want to do it myself right now.

Call gm cust service, tell them you belive somone put dex 3 in your trans and you want thhe other more knowledgeable dealer to flush it(the one that had the 6. I sure wouldnt want 3 in my truck, possibly send some oil out for analysis (dont know if or which lab could detect if contaminated w/dex 3 vs 6. Also how long itd take for them to test it and if you need yoru truck your sol. Some of these dealers really dont know what htey are talking about.

What makes you think they put DexIII in your transmission? Did they change the spin on for you? If so, it's only about 6-8 ounces of oil max in a trans that holds 12.7 qts (406 ounces), <2 percent....nothing to worry about. It can wait till your ready to drop the bucks for the Transynd IMO.

I just bought 2 gallons yesterday. $40.86 per gallon. And I didn't even get a kiss.:(

Maybe I can justify the cost of an 09 so I dont have to spend money on the trans fluid because its so expensive:) ill trade it.

I decided to change my transmission filter, hunted all over for dexron 6 and finally went to the dealer, $10 for a quart!!! No KISS either, I really expected more for $10.00 bucks. I had an oil distributor tell me they would have dexron 6 early in 07, hope it's a little cheaper.

GM recommends DexVI in 06 & 07 Allisons. Allison suggests Transynd in all the Allison 1000's.

The only place currently (that I know of) to get DexVI is the dealer.

Call some GM dealers in your area and get the parts dept. and ask them for availability of DexVI.

For what you spend on Dex VI, you can get Transynd. At Stewart& Stevinson (Detroit and Allison shops out West) I just bought a gal of Transynd for $34 and filters for $9.xx each. When I flushed mine for Transynd, it took 6 gal to get all the old fluid out, FYI.
Tansynd must work well because Alli will warranty all new 1000's for 100k mi if switched to Transynd when new (except light duty GM pickups, I think because GM has to handle the warranty work.). Also, when I was a the shop they told me they have the Waste Managemnt Fleet w/ Alli 3000's and 4000's and now have over 12,000 hours on all the trucks they service without 1 transmission faliure. Unless they guy's full of crap, that's proof enough for me.

Well, looks like I'll have to do the flush myself.
Went to the Allison service center today to get a few filters and ask them to flush the trans. Seems they have some deal with GM that only allows them to service 4500 and up trucks and can't do the 2500HD or 3500HD units.
At least I was able to get fairly good prices on both the filters and the Transynd. Less than $7 each for filters (if I purchase 5 or more) and 5 gal. of Transynd was $161.27.
I get 6 filters for not much more than what my dealer wanted for one.
Now to get the nerve to start the change over... Ought to be about a 3 Corona job.

I will never go to the dealer again after hearing your guys prices. I think it was $70 for 2 filters. I didn't even get a reach around!

You have got to have a Med. Duty GMC truck dealer somewhere around Fresno. Get the Ally filters there (~$7) and find a decent GM dealer for the DEX VI. I think I paid ~$5 for a quart.

I wouldnt worry if there was a quart of dex 3 in your truck(they came with ex 3 for years and the trans hasnt changed internaly). I would go to synthetic but just becasue I'm a believer in the stuff in a trans. I wouldnt be worried about it and drop everything to get it done.....just do it when you can. When you do the flush would also be the time to go to a deep allison pan if you so desire and maybe a suncoast filter loc if your the kind thats looking for extra insurance. The instructions to do a flush are pretty easy for the DIYer. There are good instructions too on the flush. May be called the hoot method but I cant quite remember.

Explain your displeasure with the someone at the dealership if you chose and see if they will do the flush possibly to keep ya happy if you bring the fluid. But I wouldnt push the issue and I would watch the tech that did it as I dont trust anyone ;) If they dont try and make you happy just find another dealer :)
