: Speedometer is stuck past 120MPH totally dead
miamidieselflorida 01-11-2007, 01:02 PM 2003 chevy duramax automatic ... i just bought the truck recieved it... today the speedometer is stuck at the max it goes... past 120 MPH... it looks to be dead. no movement while starting... the RPM's work fine and the other guages work fine too... any advice?
could it be a cable with the transmission?
or the speedo sensor or something? thanks
treeves35 01-11-2007, 01:10 PM My speedometer did the same, along with my batteries heating up over night. Come to find out there was a loose ground under the hood which caused a short in the electrical system. aleast that is what the dealership informed me.
rdean 01-11-2007, 02:04 PM Sound like a bad cluster. Mine went out on the test drive:eek: Gave me leverage in negotiating a deal:D I starting walking and they started dealing. Especially since I drove 150 miles to see the truck and had finances in hand. Dealer ended up replacing the cluster. Others on DP told me it is a common problem. Where did you purchase it? Did you get any type of warranty?
miamidieselflorida 01-11-2007, 02:12 PM bought it as is.. no warranty... does chevy has a recall on these things...?
Also noticed my both front powerwindows are not working... but the rears do...
could this be a short somewhere? how can normal electrical shorts be diagnosed?
thanks
bthurta 01-11-2007, 02:17 PM You probally need a new cluster. Try this and see if it will get you buy for awhile. Turn the key off & on several times and see if it will go back to zero. Each time it should get a little closer to 0. Do not turn the key enough to turn the motor over.
Hope this helps.
RanaExcavating 01-11-2007, 04:30 PM If that doesn't work tip the truck towards the drivers side and shake it while turning the key on and off until it goes back to zero. Or drive backwards really really fast!
Tolliwacker 01-11-2007, 04:50 PM My speedo acts up every now and then maybe once every 3 or so months then acts accordingly. I am not gonna worry about it until total failure.
Just try the key on and off method, might start working, unless there is more to it like the windows....
bthurta 01-11-2007, 06:20 PM If it's under warranty get it done now! The cluster is pretty pricey. If out of warranty wait till it's out.

Tolliwacker 01-11-2007, 08:52 PM If out of warranty like mine is, then the guy off of Ebay will fix em for about 120.00 with a FAST turnaround. I have 170,000 miles on the rig, but I appreciate the thought!

:exactly:
Tex735 01-13-2007, 11:01 AM Yeah, PRICY!!! Mine died and I went the dealer rout to fix. If I remember correctly, it was $400 for the part!!! It is a fairly common problem. The service tech knew exactly what was wrong as soon as I said speedo not working. He didn't even have to check anything out. He just said "you need a new cluster" and gave me a price... If you can find that guy on line who will do it for $120, I'd suggest you go that route. I'm still kicking myself for not researching a little better before I went to the stealer!!!
RickDLance 01-13-2007, 11:11 AM Might also consider one of those cool looking aftermarket ones. I know for sure that JP Customs, a supporting vendor here handles them. Maybe some of our other vendors have them also.
