: high idle solenoid
the_other_matt 01-10-2007, 05:35 PM i have done a lot of searching here lately about the high idle solenoid. think mine is toast. i am pretty sure i can fix it, that is if i knew what it looked like!
does anyone got a picture of one in its native location?
thanks!
rock_shoes 01-10-2007, 05:41 PM Hope you're right about being able to fix it yourself because the stealers price is obscene. Can't find it at the parts stores either. At least not in my area anyway. Don't have time to snap a photo for you right now but if you look for an actuating solenoid around the ip you should find it. connects to a throttle control lever.
the_other_matt 01-10-2007, 05:48 PM the guy i talked to tried to tell me the 6.2 didn't have one! nothing on my truck looks/works like its supposed to, so i will hold out for a picture.
from the sounds of it you can get an ac "bump" solenoid or caddy cruise solenoid and fab something up easy enough with a switch...probably what i will do
rock_shoes 01-10-2007, 06:06 PM Whoever you talked to was definitely either full of it or just doesn't know about these engines. They definitely do have one.
gmctd 01-10-2007, 07:03 PM It is on the front driver's-side of the Inj Pump - connector has green wire, fast-idle rod pushes against the throttle arm.
It's nearly identical to the ones used on the rochester duo-jet and quadrajet carbs back in the 60's-80's
It may be ok - pull the green wire, jumper the spade-lug to the + battery terminal, it should try to push the throttle open.
If that works, check the HPCS\Fast-Idle switch, outside rear of the passenger-side head, just back of #8 exhaust port.
Look on the driver's-side head, front of the #1 exhaust port, for the temperature gage sender - HPCA\FI switch is same location at the rear of the passenger-side head.
Should have two-wire connector, one orange, one green wire, which goes up to the HPCA solenoid in the IP, then to the FI solenoid.
High Sierra 2500 01-10-2007, 07:39 PM I have the picture... Give me a minute, I can't seem to get it to upload...
High Sierra 2500 01-10-2007, 07:43 PM Here we go... Hope this helps! :)
sirk798 01-10-2007, 09:59 PM not sure if it matters, but my "rod" aka set screw? giggles and is kinda loose, is that normal, or should it be replaced?
High Sierra 2500 01-10-2007, 10:13 PM It giggles? Scary...
If the fast idle works, don't worry about it. I believe they are all like that...
sirk798 01-10-2007, 10:20 PM hmmm, it works... well thats a tough question, until i replace the fan clutch thats locked in, i am not honestly sure if it does or not... it starts good... but doesn't really...grrr. didn't really warm up until i was half way to where i was going... i am just going through the entire truck working on all the small stuff. and redoing the entire suspension and bushings until i replacethe tranny in a month or so.... so who knows, i guess i will order one up from GM and call it a day... there what like 50 busks?
High Sierra 2500 01-10-2007, 10:34 PM No, they are more expensive than that. Particularly from the dealer... Possibly as much as $150.
The one on my truck moves around a bit as well. I think that is normal. You should be able to tell if the solenoid is working... Try this:
With the engine running (preferably hot), disconnect the wire that goes to the solenoid. Take a clip lead and connect it to the spade terminal on the solenoid. Connect the other end of the clip lead to the + terminal on one of the batteries. Now give the engine some gas (the solenoid is not strong enough to open the throttle by itself). The engine idle should be pretty high now. Disconnect the clip lead. You should distinctly hear the engine drop rpm...

Anyone have a wiring diagram for this?
the_other_matt 01-11-2007, 12:31 PM ok, thanks guys...i will investigate further today and find out whats up.
gmctd 01-11-2007, 01:19 PM Orange wire is switched ignition power, green wire goes to the HPCA terminal on the top passenger-side of the IP, splits at that connector and to the Fast Idle solenoid connector, as in the picture.
The connector with the large pink wire, in front of the green-wired HPCA connector, is switched ignition power to the Fuel Shutoff solenoid, inside the IP.
JustOneTruck 01-11-2007, 01:42 PM I rebuilt mine with electrical spray  lube ..........yes it was a giggly to I thought it was just had a lot of play .But when charged or energized its still .So just some good electrical cleaner first . Some blast of air to blow it out and I sprayed it good right down the top of the rod with a silcone spray .And now it works fine . These diesels have a way of collecting durt and grime . Clean it and I think you might be happy. Next would be a volt meter and a little time . I have the directions at home but could scan and send you the pdf.
Good Luck

thanks 1truck!
funny how a good cleaning can bring electrical components back from the grave sometimes huh :D
would you please scan in the directions you have for me and everyone else? i think that would be worthy of a sticky being as the stupid solenoid alone is ~$150.00
