Exhaust smoke problem...

Also, at high altitude here in New Mexico, 6 to 9 thousand feet, while going to work up steep hills, or accelerating fast, the exhaust smokes like a WW2 Destroyer laying a smoke screen. (Black smoke) A mechanic I know said it had to be the EGR assembly. I replaced that. (It's in the center of the air cleaner) Now it doesn't smoke QUITE as bad. When I go back to Oklahoma (low altitude) on trips, the engine hardly smokes at all. Thanks for the help. Nice site you all have here... Andrew

Too much fuel for the available air entering the combustion chambers. Very common for a normally aspirated diesel at higher altitudes. You can improve the situation by opening up the intake air flow path. The only real fix is to turbo it IMO.
