: I found something interesting the other day
jeff_in_rc 01-09-2007, 12:30 PM Hey all,
When the family went to LA for the holidays I was keeping an eye on the DIC and it said that I was getting 14.5mpg which I knew was way off by the simple fact I had not used that much fuel. After filling up I hand calculated the mpg and came up with 17.1. (driving 65-75 the whole way) I then checked the amount of fuel used and found it to be spot on, there was no difference there. Now I always reset my DIC at every fill up and I was thinking why the difference??
So while I was driving around in LA I reset the DIC while moving and I noticed that it works completely different, it changes the readings almost every second and seems to react totally different than before. Has anyone else done this and noticed the change??
I also noticed that after a few days it will revert back to making slow changes in the reading. The next time I go on a trip I plan on resetting it while driving down the road to see if it is more accurate that way and I'll pass along my results.

upadowna 01-09-2007, 12:48 PM sounds like the system makes rapid assesments of fuel consumption and then averages them to get the mpg rating. the longer you drive the more data. when you step on the gas with no data the numbers will drop dramatically, however if you have more data the average would stay relatively close. I wonder how often the computer takes the measurements.
farmdog 01-09-2007, 12:49 PM I believe the mpg is calculated using all miles since the last reset to to come up w/ the mpg. The more miles since the last reset the less responsive it is to change due to increase or decrease in the short term. If that makes sense.

Yes that does and thanks! Now it's just a waiting game until I can take a trip out of town to see the long term results.
tuney443 01-12-2007, 01:00 AM Just goes to prove men should'nt think with their dics.If your woman drove your DMAX,it would give her better mileage.:D

JeffJust wondering, you dont have the instant economy mixed up with the average economy do you?
Rob from BC Canada 01-12-2007, 10:26 AM Is there a way to have it read "Instant Economy" on an ongoing basis?
The Waco Kid 01-12-2007, 10:48 AM 2005 models don't have instant only average.
xgardx 01-12-2007, 07:32 PM Yes, i've done the same before, and it is more just because its instantly reset sincee you're already moving... when i do it right at start up at the gas station, and it's sitting there ideling for 30 or so seconds, its enough run time to make it react slower than if you hit the reset "in flight".
I'm surprised your 'gallons used' was right on though.
whenever i fill up, the DIC is always a gallon or two shorter than how much i really used... either that, or every station i fill up at is off calibration, haha!
Also it has seemed to become more inaccurate since i added my Edge Juice.
anyone else seen this?
gmclly05 01-13-2007, 12:22 AM My mileage and fuel consumption have never been accurate with my DIC...so I use my head!

Thats the way it is
05' Ditry Duramax 01-13-2007, 03:06 PM I don't know when you guys stop the pump when you are filling up. I fill the tank all the way to the fuel cap. I've always noticed a difference in amount used to the amount i put in. I know it's because I go all the way up the neck. I have heard of the injectors leaking and that would make your fill up gallons different from what you had used but I know mine aren't leaking. So that's just what I had noticed.
porterz 01-13-2007, 03:17 PM Mine also.. when I fill up the full is WAY past the full mark on the gauge.. and I drive for about 50-75 mi before that little needle moves below full.. lol
Well i have noticed on mine that the gallons used is also way off. I correct for the difference in tire size and use the gallons on the pump to cal my milage.. Arm
Every Day Diesel 01-13-2007, 05:38 PM Mine is always with in .5 gals. when I fill up and the DIC is with in 1 mpg.
If you have a programer the DIC will be way off.
