a bud of mine has a 99 ford F-250 with the 7.3, if he try's to accelerate hard the truck will shut down after 5 or so seconds. it will start right back up. we have replaced the fuel filter with no help. anyone have any ideas?

Cam position sensor would be something to check out. I had one go bad at 33k in my '01 PowerStroke. Mine would just shut off going down the road, then magically restart.

You can get them at the International dealer for about half of the Ferd dealer. If it's not bad, at least you have a good spare. Cheap insurance for less then $100

You'll need a 10mm socket to remove the bolt that holds it in the front of the block. One little harness to unplug and thats it. 5 minute job.

gah! when its cold or hot? or doesn't matter? cuz my stroker was doing that very thing whether it was cold or hot.... it was having hard starts too. when i changed the filter it took care of the problem but i was told it also could be icing up. so it could be that if u have a little water in the fuel, there should be a yellow lever right behing the filter u can drain the water out there with... the cam position sensor seems more likely but I always try the easiest/cheapest things first.

started this summer, so maybe the cam sensor. I was hoping it was the filter also but it wasn't

when you crank the engine does the tach rise?

7.3L POWERSTROKES also had some issues with the fuel pickup inside the tank.

be careful when pulling the cam sensor sometimes they stick and can break off in the front cover.
random shut downs also if the cam sensor does not help. have it scaned for any codes. dont rule out the fuel driver module.

If a cam sensor dont fix it check fuel pres and have it scaned post what codes you have so you dont have to throw parts at it. The cam sensor is good to replace, if I owned a 7.3 PSD I would have a spare in the glove box.

he is going to get the codes and get back with me and I will post.

well there were no codes stored in the truck, my bud said someone told him it might be the fuel pump. any thoughts on that? do these have a Schroeder valve to test like cars do? if so what should the pressure be?

No valve we rig a fitting after the pump. You can open the drain valve and after its drained turn the key on and see it much is coming out. Fuel pres should be 55-65 psi if you can come up with the fittings.
