I was just wondering if anybody has had their rocker panels coated with a spray-on type liner. I bought a used truck and it must have seen a lot of gravel roads because are a ton of chips in the paint on the underside. Even with mudflaps. I was wondering if spraying them might hide the old chips, protect it, and keep it from rusting?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/733_rockers1.jpg

I was thinking here, just below the doors.

Here's some more chipped up paint, not dirt!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/Z25_rockers2.jpg

If I keep my truck I might do mine down the road.

What color are you talking about. I have victory red and I have thought that but did not know about the color situation.

My truck is carbon so I would just get it in black. Victory red should make for a nice shade of pink down the road. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

No joke! That is why I live with the chipped paint now.

You could likely get it done in black and you probably wouldn't even see it.

Volkswagens have some kind of linex type paint on the bottom to prevent chipping. It looks almost like it is painted over the same color as the car. It is soft and holds up really well. I wonder if a body shop would know how to do this. They must have to repair cars that have this when they get in accidents. I am sure other cars use the same thing. There has to be a decent looking solution.

3M makes a clear liner that is about 1.3mil thick that you can install basically like you would put over your hood to stop rock chips up there and I would say that you could just double coat it or something and that might work.. Never hurt to try that...

It has been done, I saw a red Dodge with the lowers sprayed red. Couldn't really tell unless you got close. I probably will do it to mine, as it is getting chipped up, and I'm having to sand and fill the chips since they are getting eversosmall rust spots in them.

I have considered it but it would change the look of my white toy and it is expensive. I am currently considering just repainting the rocker panels and then covering them with that clear adhesive tape stuff . . . .

also look into www.clear-guard.com (http://www.clear-guard.com)

E-mail him and ask for rocker panel covers.
I have his stuff on the hood and headlights (blue tint) and it seems to work good.

I just put running boards on my truck and did all the touch up on the rockers and needless to say used almost the whole tube, then I used the clear 3m film from Cabelas. It went on pretty good but I couldn't get all the air bubbles out beause of all the touch up paint. I should of put this on when I bought the truck but I put it off as always. But I think the film will help out, we'll see.

Ryan,

I did line-x my rocker panels exactly as you have shown--including the rear panels and the wheel wells.

It protects them completely. It was done on my previous truck--2000 6.0l gas truck--it was white and you do not notice it. On the rear--I had it come up the side to the point where you could just see it. You know I still got chips above the line-X!!

Anyway--I would do it again--but probably only on the back panels and further up--since my truck now is black.
