It's an intake silencer. The extra hose and the "box" are to absorb and reduce pressure waves radiating from the turbo compressor inlet. It doesn't really reduce all that much noise, some people have removed it and plugged the port in hopes of getting more turbo noise, but the DMax is just too quiet all around. Didn't have it on the 2001, (that's the bottom picture) and that's what I have on mine, just a little "lid" to cover up the plumbing on the turbo and wastegate.

I like the look of it though. I have seen rigs with those absent and I for one dont like it removed.

I can't see who the whistle would bother. I still have good high frequency hearing, and it doesn't bug me in the least, and there are many other noisemakers that do bother me in that range.

We have an ultrasonic welder at work and it produces a lot of 18 kHz harmonics, and when they turn it on, it literally drives me from the room like a psycho dog whistle. The guy running it says "huh? hear what?"Edited by: nwpadmax
