: LBZ Has More Engine Noise at 14K Miles?

Anyone else notice an increase/change in the amount of clatter in their LBZ after some miles? It seems that in the last 1,000 miles mine has become a bit noisier...Standard diesel clatter, but it was almost non-existant up until recently. The truck just rolled 14K. All else seems well, performance and fuel ecoomy haven't changed. Only mods are !cat, !Muffler and blocker/fingerstick. I has Royal Purple Synthetic in it, not that it matters. Just curious if others have noticed a more Traditional Diesel clatter with theirs after break-in?

I noticed it with mine, 21006 miles to be exact. I filled up with B5 blended with LSD and it quieted down a lot. Just my $.02 worth.

I haven't noticed a change in mine. I'd be willing to bet that it's the reduced lubricity of the ULSD fuel that we are getting now.
California has had it for quite a while, which could explain why I haven't noticed a change... or I'm just deaf :)

I've noticed a slight change lately as well... But its getting colder here and they're always louder on cold starts. Also though, the majority of fuel stations transitioned from LSD (<- no, not the drug) to ULSD around the same time the weather began to cool down. So, not sure if its climate or fuel, but the truck has 13K miles and Rotella since day 1.

Your not saying you are getting old are you Rich?:D I have also been adding Power Service and that also helps when I can't find B5. ULSD is so......

I have 3200 miles on my new duramax and I sure hope it gets louder. Traded in a 03 chevy with the gas 6.0 and it was louder than the new duramax. I want to here the clatter. LOL LOL

Yeah I noticed it got a bit louder too. Not much but noticeable. I just chalked it up to winter temps. Certainly alot quieter than my LLY was last winter... 15.5k on the truck 15w40 Rotella since break in. Power Service every other tankfull.

I have a ticking noise, thats very noticable from the cab, esp when theres not alot of turbo noise(cruising or idling), my "diesel (ie chatter or normal diesel noise) is non existant.

at least with the cummins-from my experience-they get alittle bit louder as the miles rack up-until the engine is broke in-usually around 20,000 miles. like stated earlier- its a diesel! enjoy it- it isn't suppose to be as quiet as a gas engine

At about 14k mine is definitely louder than it was new. Still not as loud as my 03 which seemed louder than any other Dmax I compaired it too. That 03 hauled a$$ and got 23mpg highway so the clatter didn't concern me.

Well, seems normal, since you guys are hearing it too. I'm not concerned about it, just curious. I can rule out the colder temps possibility, as It was 80+ degrees here the other day, and it was just as noisy as the Morning I started it in Atlanta at 35 degrees. :)

Just turned 12k, definitely louder. No biggie. Still quiet.

I have heard from various sources that all bosch injectors gradually "creep"(increase fueling) as well as gradually lose pilot injection. I wouldn't think it would be noticeable that early in the life cycle though. I'd say try an additive and check balance rates.

Mine only seems like it changed when I am doing about 40 then hit the pedal and it jumps up 70 70 or so, and it has a loud chatter.

I'm at 25k and have noticed the motor getting louder...My LB7 did this as well.

I also am steadily getting better mpg(or it could be I'm finally keeping my foot out of it!).

I agree, im at 4500 miles and my 6.0 at 35K made a lot more noise. I guess as the Dmax breaks in it get louder. Guess ill find out in about 10K miles.

My buddies is real quiet. Even at 22,800 miles. Want noise? My 6.0 Ford on a cold morning? Hah! I may have to have a new Duramax. I drove a co-workers 07' Classic 3500 series, and its REAL impressive.

@ 20,500 I do not notice a difference. Running ULSD for the last 2 months.

Turned 15K this morning and noticed for the last thousand miles or so it was starting to sound more like a diesel. I thought it was the cooler temps and the evo definantely adds some diesel sound but I swapped back to stock and though not a noticeable as with the evo on it is def. louder than 5K miles ago. I use PS at every fill up and we do not have winter fuel so as far as the new fuel being noisier I have no idea.

When I had my Ford 7.3 Powerstroke, my dughter bought me a cap that had "Ford Diesels - Rattle Rattle - Stink Stink" printed on it. I still wore it when I bought my Ford 6.0 Powerstroke but gave it away when I got smart and bought my D/A. The D/A is sooooooooooo quiet!!!! :D

IMHO, if the noise bothers a D/A owner, they should just turn the radio up a little louder and sit back and enjoy it. My D/A has 28K on it now and I can't hear any difference in noise. Maybe the Fords ruined my hearing???? :)

Many in the link below claim their motor is running quieter when adding lubricant to fuel, and some also claim their balance rates are improving.
Is this a ULSD induced issue? I'm no expert here. Just passing on info read on this site.

i have noticed a big difference in sound based on fuel. Not between ulsd and lsd just between stations. Really a crab shoot I think on getting good fuel.

i've asked a diesel mech. about that ( typewriter clicking noise) he said that its normal, its the injector pump/valves popping off

I just made a comment about my truck last night while sitting in it. It has def. gotten louder than when it was brand new. 16,000 on it now. Still quiter than my buddies 04 LLY.

After reading some of these posts, I really don't understand those that want a louder truck. Mine too has gotten louder (just shy of 20k now), but it is still fairly quiet and I can hold a conversation in the cab without feeling like I have to raise my voice. Riding in my uncle's 7.3PSD I feel like I have to yell and the drone really is irritating after a while.

To each his own, but I really don't want to be deaf, and if you don't think a drone has an effect on your hearing, you might want to ask your doctor about it.

And no, I am not an old fart preaching to you young bucks. I am in my early 30s and play in a rock band, and know full well that you have to take care of your ears. ;)

you're right about that! take care of your ears! I had a hole in my ear drum last year from a bad knee board wipe out, had surgery where they cut my ear off and put a skin graft on the ear drumm, well needless to say, I def. dont have the hearing I had before out of that ear, but atleast the hole is colsed.

sorry that was a side note i guess.

have a good one.

Its not the injector pump/vavles, popping off:eek: , Its the oil, coming out of the pump, If i run synthetic, it wont do it.

Paul, all I can say is ouch. I broke my nose in a knee board accident a number of years ago, but sheesh, I'll take that any day over your situation. That doesn't sound like fun at all. Glad you are better though!

Try a little marvel mystery oil. I have been putting that in because of the loss of lubrication from ULSD and it has made a huge difference.

I have noticed some noise--but I beleive it is the result of the colder temps. If I don't use the glow plugs prior to start up it sounds as if the rods are coming through the block along with some excessive diesel smoke.

mnhunterman
02-23-2007, 02:59 PM
yes Jeff, it is fun until a wipeout happens. I have never broke a bone...

Another side note, Are you guys thinking the value of the 06-07.5 is going to go down a great deal due to the new style coming out?

Ok, now that everyone has mentioned it....I guess I too have noticed that my truck is a bit noiseier at 16,000 miles than it was new. But then, I could just be imagining the whole thing?
