: Do I need more pulling power

I just picked up a 04 Duramax/Allison a few weeks ago. I have the say this truck is awesome. But what mods can I do to get some more pulling power. I will be pulling an 16' open car trailer with a 3000 pound 98 Z28 on it. trailer and car may weight 4500 or so.

I was thinking of doing an exhaust system but I like how quiet this truck is and I would like to keep it that way . I also remember reading something about an Edge programmer? How are they and are they safe to use??? I just spent alot of money on my new rig and I would hate to hurt the motor/ Trans because of it.

I picked up a prodigy brake controller a few weeks ago because all you guys said it works great. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Thanks guys and looking foward to some good info in the future

There is no free lunch here but mild increases like exhaust mods should have no effect on component life and boost usable power a noticable amount. I am curiuos though becuase if you have stock tires on the rig, it should "walk the dog" with the trailer load you have.

Edge's Juice/Attitude will add lots of power option flexibility. When towing though, you'll want to keep the added power to a minimum (Level 1) to keep EGTs down and make the tranny last. I'd also think your current setup, with relatively low aerodynamic profile and weight, would pull very well.

i have an 04 and one of my trailers is a 24 ft open tag car hauler i use for hauling customer vehicles etc. it is a tad bit heavier than yours weighing about 2300 empty and my truck pulled this trailer loaded effortlessly in stock form. sounds like to me you are a power junky and WANT more power! if so, i would go with the juice. i just finished installing mine last night, it is definitely the FIX you are looking for. wil

you can get it from a lot of different places. shop around. get it with the attitude monitor, as it will ad a ton of much needed features. should be able to get it for around $650 or so, worth every penny. wil

You won't NEED a juice or anything else to tow that load. But, if you need to convince, wink, wink, someone else in your life that the truck would actually perform better under the circumstances with just a modest upgrade (4" exhaust, Edge Juice, Bilsteins) why, don't let us stop you.

Oh, and don't forget the Schefanaker towing mirrors, a very important safety item....

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif The load you describe won't tax the D/A at all. I tow heavy (16-18k 5th wheel toy hauler), D/A yanks that bad boy right up. JJ

For mild towing I would vote on the Juice/Attitude for its built in protection. Lower hp settings of course when pulling.

But is it a good Idea to do an exhaust at the same time to keep the EGT down ??/

I think you'll find that an exhaust change is necessary with almost any kind of performance enhancement...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

At least with you'll be able to see what the temps are and decide for yourself so you could just do a Juice/Attitude first, but I'd have the coin in hand for the exhaust once you see how warm it can get, I think you'll agree. The

what should the EGT's be when towing or getting on the truck? where should they be at normal driving

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gifWith the small amount of weight you are towing why risk voiding your warranty? Upgrading the exhaust is usually a given when upgrading with edge/juice, predator, etc. GM's position is any of these can void the warranty. Your stock D/A will pull that load anywhere/anytime at any safe speed you want to go. JJ http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I added a Flowmaster muffler over a year ago and have no numbers to compare how much it helped with EGTs. No problems with warranty either.

Egts are effected by how hard you push the peddle and the road grade (slope). This past week while pulling about 7500lbs I would see a peek about 1180° while climbing some steep hills (but less than a 1/2 mile long). I was running my Quad box on 215 hp. I just take it easy in this power mode. Short passing bursts doesn't seem to hurt anything. (I do have Attitude EGTs set for some protection, but the Attitude is actually set for racing, so if EGTs stayed right under that setting for very long, well....... lets say for pulling I really need to set the EGT warning lower.
