I first took the rig to Les Schwab to have the tires rotated, at which time I had them inspect the "innards" to see if anything appeared askew. They were the ones who found the over excessive play in the bearings. So, I took it to the dealership and told them what the other guys found. To be safe, they had their tech ride with me for a few miles. He too detected the "dud-dud-dud-dud-dud" and verrrrrry slight vibration transferring thru to the wheel. He said it was "ever so subtle", but as I pointed out to him, it's something that only the operator would notice immediately. So up on the lift it went and they found that the fronts did have excessive play. Off came the wheels and then they determined that the driver's side bearing was shot and the passenger side was getting there. So...I had both replaced. That fixed all aspects of the problem; shimmy gone, noise gone, vibration gone, handling tighter. That's the million dollar question, and nobody seems to have an answer http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif 2001 D-Max 2500 HD, 75,000 mi. 4x4 but it's seen fourwheel maybe a half dozen times since I've had the truck and I've never had it offroad.
