Guys

I need some help ASAP (I leave for a two day RV vacation tommorow morning).

Yesterday I picked up my new RV, a 29' 5th wheel, that weighs about 7500lbs. I didn't think that it would be a problem towing, I pull a 10,000lb stock trailer all the time, but on the way home from the dealer, I had to really watch the temp. If I held the throttle too long on any hills the temp would climb out of site. I think it maxed around 115°C (240F).

The truck is bone stock except for two bottles of Rad Relief from Diesel Services Group in Saskatoon and a FSD cooler.

Do you guys have any suggestions that I could do quickly?

The truck is in the muffler shop right now. Getting a 3" straight pipe from the downpipe flange back and a K&N filter.

I was thinking of yanking the thermostat out to free up the coolant flow. I will make sure the rad is clean tonight too.

Thanks in advance

Was your fan clutch kicking in? Fuzz between coolers and rad? As you can see by my recent post i'm having a little difficulty myself, lol.

I was wondering about the fan clutch, this last winter I had a winter front on and towing my stcok trailer up a good hill and the temp started to rise. When it got over 100C I could hear this whooosing sound that I had never heard before. The temp dropped instantly. I assumed that it was the fan clutch kicking in. I never heard that last night, I just assumed that in the summer it was always engaged.

Is there an easy way to check it?

Not sure on how to check it properly, my truck is very similiar in years to yours accept i'm a shortbox. My clutch kicks in around 105 - 110C and cools right off when not pulling a load, generally it doesn't come on much in the winter. When it does come on cool down is rapid unless i'm pulling a load then its a slow decrease in temps. If you didn't hear that whooshing sound chances are its not working, the fan will rotate with the engine running, just not fast enough to do much until the clutch kicks in. You can also do as i didn't do on the steep grades, gear down and lay off the throttle but that won't help you much if the clutch isn't working.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Ya, I read your thread on the coolant leak/disapearance. Did you figure out where it was going? I hate to say it but a coolant leak is almost always bad.

If you can pull the raditor and take it too a shop for cleaning and clean all the bugs and weeds out of the AC condesor and make sure everything is clean an free flowing.

Your RV has more Aerodynamic drag than the stock trailer, it's not just weight. You can also tow at night or early before things warm up that helps.

The exhaust should help some. was your coolant full? radiator cap good?
Tranny is tied to the coolant temp. put in another cooler for the tranny after the stock unit.Edited by: quantum mechanic

Exhaust made a big difference in mine, used to get really hot driving on the highway, but never was a problem in the city. Radiator problems was my first thought, checked it had it flushed, no change.

Canadian Tire sells those breathers, if you wanna give that a try, I highly reccommend it.
