Diesel Dually 01-05-2007, 04:32 PM No matter how good the rest of the line is, there is, inevitably, a lemon. Sorry it seems like it is yours.
Have faith...mebbe this is it.
astieg 01-05-2007, 09:19 PM sounds like a Ferd to me! Are you sure that it is not a Ferd with :chevy: badging? Sorry to hear your problems can you sneek an extended warranty into the picture, maybe cheeper than all future repairs.
Armalite 01-06-2007, 12:42 AM My wife told me to sell it when the injectors were reported as bad. The Trans has held up well since the replacement. The turbo has emitted an overboost code but the tech told me it might be related to the injector problem. The fuel system (with the exception of the injectors) seems fine too. The truck has been in the shop many times for repairs. I have kept my cool for a long time because the dealership, one service writer in particular, has provided excellent service and literally put her arse on the line for me to ensure my satisfaction. I like the truck. I do not tow with it. I just feel safe carting my family around on long trips with it. My case is an excellent example of someone in the service department who gives a crap about me. If it were not for this person, my post would have been more colorful in reflecting my displeasure with the product. As far as modifications, I only have a Banks Exhaust. At one point I ran the Juice off and on. I did not like shifting characteristics so I took it off. I think establishing a good relationship with the service personnel and getting face to face with the diesel techs at the dealership can go a long way.
6tonsoffun 01-06-2007, 02:44 AM Do you take it to Groth Bros ?

Wonderful truck!..

1 set of injectors
5 sets of ideler arms and pitman arms

2 radios
1 crankshaft senser
1 glow plug controler
2 4 wheele drive stitches
i am forgeting a few other things.
I have had bad luck with this truck too. i love it to death but it dosnt hold up well. i am starting to look for a dodge so i can have a reliable truck.
Duramax_man 01-06-2007, 02:07 PM Here's my list, in 36000 miles.
2 sets of batterys
4 fog light bulbs
4 sets of power camper mirrors
1 starter
1 alternator
1 4wd actuator
2 door speakers
2 wheel speed sensors
1 neutral safety switch
1 set of tires
1 front bumper (rusting thru)
rear brakes
Love the truck and the power, But I would be pissed if I had problems with the transmission when towing. Isn't this what you buy a truck like this for. afterall its rated for 12000 lbs towing cap. So far my dealer has been good to me. Just my $.02
TwoFast4Lv 01-06-2007, 04:54 PM DAMN! Some of you go through alot of parts

Relax. Breathe.
Injectors on the 01's are more apt to be replaced. Thats just the way it is with the 01's. Look at it this way...they're covered. Yes, you are inconvienienced while the truck is down, but still...
Do two things about the A/C....
1) check the cabin filter and replace it. If you haven't, it can get clogged up and slow A/C and heater performance.
2) IIRC, I heard that the low-pressure switch goes bad, esp on the earlier trucks...that could be the problem. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110481&highlight=A%2FC+low+pressure
Yes, you've had to replace major parts. But think about it, its really not all that bad. You have new parts now. You want to see a repair history? Check out this post...its the VIN check for my truck, before I bought it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showpost.php?p=597871&postcount=13 You can add batteries, shocks and a new T-case (at my expense -- due to dealer negligence that I cannot prove!) to that list, too. I was a bit leery to purchase it at first, but Eric and GMCSID made the point that all the things replaced were items that we here at the Place have found to be "wear items", and I now had new parts. They made a good point.
Am I scared to drive it? Hell no. Other than the three things I listed, I've put 25,000 trouble-free miles on it since last year.
kvdmax 01-06-2007, 05:22 PM Not to rub it in but here's the list for my 2003 with 65k miles (about 10k while towing 11k lb boat):
1 set of batteries
1 set DRL lights (only one burned out but replaced both)
1 belt (just done within last 1k miles)
about 10 oil changes (I go longer on synthetic and horrible about changing)
1 Allison spin on filter
change rear diff fluid to synthetic
1 set of tires
2 fuel filters (again, horrible about changing)
All in all, I'm pretty happy with my truck. Seems like you've kept your cool so far and that's probably 100% due to your dealer... much different story at most other dealers. Good for you!
Armalite 01-06-2007, 06:33 PM TheBac,
I replaced the cabin filters and the low pressure switch. I also had a leak test done. Dealer could not find any problems with the AC and told me it was "within spec". I get it back on Monday, will see how it behaves then.
mxrider801 01-06-2007, 06:50 PM I guess i got lucky with mine.
1 set of injectors
tailgate straps
1nsbu( or what ever) switch
1 set o tires
then jsut maintainence
All in all i'm very happy with mine and will buy another one when i get out of college.
For those new guys or people looking to buy a d max don't be scared readign this thread because most of the trucks run well and have very few problems. Places like this are for people to discuss problems or mods.

Look at dieseltruckresourse.com if you haven't already. Dodge has it's fair share of problems too. We have owned an '03 and now have an '04 and have had lots of problems with both.
2003
A/C pump seized at under 17,000mi. and shredded our belt.
Vibration at 60-65mph.
Steering problems.
2004 59,000mi.
1 bad sensor on clutch
replaced ball joints 2 times
seat belt latch broke
something in the heater vent system broke, no heat to feet now unless we get it fixed ($600-$1000)
now we are only getting 7-9mpg towing 5,000lb. trailer. Power is terrible. Maybe it's a fuel system problem?
4x4 system is disappointing to say the least!
We drove Chevys for years and went to Dodge for the Cummins. I like the Cummins but unfortunatly they installed it in a Come-apart.
Armalite 01-11-2007, 02:53 PM Since I started this thread last week, the dealer still has my truck. The new injectors arrived on Monday, they had them installed on Tuesday. I called and they told me there was another problem; the FICM (fuel injector control module). The FICM came in the next day (Wed.) and they installed it. I called the dealer last night and they said there is another problem and they don't know what it is. I will be calling them today shortly after lunch time to find out what, if anything, they discovered. Originally the work was all covered. With the FICM replacement I am at 1300 bills.
Kawtipping 01-11-2007, 06:17 PM Have you always taken the truck to the same dealer? Sounds like they are finding things wrong for the sake of finding things wrong!

Armalite 01-11-2007, 11:12 PM Well, I called the dealer again. They do not know what is wrong with the truck. At this point, the injectors and the FICM did not fix the problem. I am concerned that they are just throwing parts at the thing and racking up a huge bill that they think I am going to pay. So far, they have not told my service writer anything about the truck. She is furious with the technician and service manager because she can't provide me with an update. Should I be responsible for paying for a FICM replacement they mis-diagnosed?

Did you authorize the FICM? Then you probably have to pay for it. In small claims court you would have to convince the judge that the service tech was incompetent or didn't follow the diagnostic procedures. (Tough to do)
Probably at this point, you should plan on being at the dealership first thing in the morning for a calm discussion with the service writer, service manager and the dealership manager on the truck and the repairs that are on-going. If you fail to get satisfaction, next stop is the owner. Then the GM help line.

Armalite 01-19-2007, 04:02 PM Got the truck back. New injectors, FICM, and a wire on the engine harness that was corroded. They had a GM area engineer come out and assist the technician with locating and splicing the the wire on the harness. Oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter were all changed. Injectors covered under warranty. FICM wire splice, and the other maintenance stuff totaled $1444.00. Took the truck on a 440 mile trip and averaged 18.86 mpg. It ran smooth.

Though I am no help with the transfer case or speakers, the tailgate is somewhat simple. If you look under the latch you can see the two little arms. They get a little "sticky". My truck suffered from the same thing. Take apart the latch, and lube everything up. Worked wonders for me. My gate closes every time now. Before that I was using a screwdriver to push the arms out when I closed the gate. It works too, but not very handy.

I remember reading that there was some sort of harness recall. I don't remember what years it covered, but if it was for yours, I would do some complaining. Even if you are out of warranty (to lazy to look back in the thread), they should have checked that first before doing the rest.
RonJT 01-19-2007, 05:16 PM Armalite,
Could the FICM problem....be really just the corroded wire in the harness??
After the wire fix...did they try installing the old FICM to verify it was indeed bad?
Armalite 01-22-2007, 06:49 AM RonJT,
Apparently they spent 8hrs labor on the wiring harness troubleshoot for which I was not charged. I think the FICM and the 8rhs labor are a wash. Kind of a Rob Peter to pay Paul?
