I just heared that before an oil change you put a small cup of diesel fuel in the oil and run the engine in idle for 5 minutes and this will clean most of the dirt out of the internal engine. Has anyone done this?

I put about a pint of automatic transmissin fluid in the oil at evey oil change. From what I understand, it has the ability to desolve most of the build up in the crank case.

Steven , I have heared that the dealers drain the oil out fill it up with automatic trans fluid and run it in idle for about 5 minutes then change to oil & change the filter for dirty gasoiline engines. I havn't heared of adding a pint in and leaving it in. I will have to try that. Does your oil stay pretty clean? I just bought this silverado and i changed the oil since it was pitch black ,drove it around the block, checked it and it looked black again.

hmm forum , I have heared alot of thing's but draining the oil and then filling it with atf i sure wouldnt reccomend , you can add a couple dollars worth of diesel to your gas tank to clean your fuel system BUT NEVER ADD GAS TO YOUR DIESEL TANK , sure way to blow it up , lots of companys make product's to clean your oil system , goto your local napa store or some where like that

Black oil does not mean it's dirty ppl , you will never beable to keep your motor oil spotless and clear , black motor oil mean's it's doing it's JOB ! you can buy a brand new 350 gm long block for 8k and 50 miles after you start it the oil will be dirty !
Black oil mean's carbon from the combustion chamber's ,and by no mean's is it going to hurt anything , yopu change your oil every 3000 miles right ?
well i goto 7,ooo miles and then change , I have over 850,000 kms on my ford f 250 300 6cyl , it's got some blow by , does not leak a drop and knock's minor at start up , the knock is normal for a high mile 300 6 , i could fix it but no use it would come back within 40,ooo miles .

The oil in my '84 turns black as ink as soon as you start it. That is just the nature of the beast. The '01 turns a honey color and seems to just stay that way. These are two entirely different engins, that is just the way they are. I have been adding the atf for about 35 years now and it has never given me a problem. When I have done engine rebuilds in the past, the inside is clean.

If you change your oil and filter every 3-4,000 miles then you will always have a clean engine!!! My rear oil seal on my 1984 6.2L diesel engine failed (actually disappeared) at about 185K miles two years ago. When I dropped the oil pan to install a neoprene seal (instead of the rope original) then I saw the usual condition of an engine that has experienced regular oil/filter changes, i.e., absolutely as clean as a new engine. The only way to get gunk build up in your crankcase, valve covers, etc. is to not change your oil/filter. Driving short frequent trips, especially in cold weather, helps build gunk, but if the oil/filter is changed every month then that ususally takes care of that condition!!!
I would never add anything to my engine oil to clean it out!!!! And I sure would not buy one that was junked up. The only way to clean up a gunked engine is to remove the oil pan, valve covers, and the lifter valley cover and clean it out!!! The oil rings would probably be clogged up and that would require diassembly. And that is why I would not buy a gunked up engine.
