I tried to change mine to the white one but was unable to get it threaded. I put the black one on and took it to the stealer and on the hoist the tech was unable to thread the new one. He stipped two out and told me the only reason to switch was so in the future one could tell if it was synthetic or not. Is this correct?
He also said the O-ring was different so we swapped O-rings and he told me not to worry and left the old one in. I am not worried about some grease monkey getting under my truck since I will change my fluids. Thanks

Huh? It comes from the factory with dino in the front. My 04.5 is white and had dino from the factory.

Well the reason that there are two colors is that the white one is made of material that won't fail when exposed to synthetic lubricants.
While it's true that the newer trucks came with dino oil, they also have the white caps from '03 on IIRC. There is also a TSB about replacing the front differential dino oil with synthetic for trucks operated in cold climates. That's why the newer trucks got the white caps.
Most members are simply changing the front differential to synthetic, so if you don't have the white cap/o-ring, the synthetic lube will eat it...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

Why would the tech tell me this then? Oh yeah he may not know right. WTF should I do then? I dont wanna be travelling then have my cap have a hole eaten through it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif That would suck big time.

Well there are those who are not familiar with synthetics. When working on aircraft as I do, you have to pay close attention to the material the seals/o-rings are made of because of the use of both dino and synthetics in various aircraft systems.
If the new cap/o-ring doesn't seem to fit, I'm not a Dmax tech so I can't offer suggestions as to what might be wrong. You'll need dmaxalliTech or GMCSID or somebody to help you out on that one, but I definitely wouldn't put synthetic in the front until you get it figured out.
If one of the tech guys doesn't pick this up, you might want to start a new thread of "White cap won't fit" or something like that, or maybe PM one of the Dmax techs.

Ben and I talked in PM, the biggest change is just the oring. As I mentioned to him, the black caps had a tendancy to come loose and leak. I like to use some sort of sealer just to act as a light glue to keep it from coming out. May not be needed, but just in case.....
