Ok, boys,

Here's a question for you. For a grand total of $1.70 I was able to buy a quick release keyholder for the truck that allows me to keep the truck running while removing the remote to lock it. Everyone has been telling me the best thing for a diesel is to keep it running instead of turning it off and on during the course of the day, particularly if you need to do some short trips. However, after I started doing this I began wondering that if I ever go to trade-in or sell the truck, the hours are going to be significantly higher than if I turned the truck on and off. Which is better to the typical diesel nut. All things being equal, if he is evaluating two 2500 hds, both with 50k miles on it, would he rather it have more running hours or less? If I'm jumping in and out of the truck doing errands for a couple of hours, do I shut it off or leave it running? Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Talked to a guy at a local dealership and he said that they do not look at hours at all, it is just a feature added for personal use only...

Better to have less hours so your average miles per hour is higher. That means that you are mostly highway miles and no extended idling. Our diesels are not meant to be idled for hours at a time. 10-20 min is the max most recommend idling. Edited by: Max Power

My remote lock will work.

Obviously less hours is better IMO, I would rahter see a truck with more miles and less hour because it show a higher proportion of highway miles(if you devide your hours and mile you cangte your average speed).

I bought a device that allows me to take the keys outa the ign and leave it running. If the brakes are touched it truns off. I do let my truck idle sometimes if I will just be going into a place quick. Right or wrong I will shut it off if it will idle for more then 5-10 minutes. Other wise I let her idle but I turn on the air conditioning. This puts enough load on the motor believe it or not to keep the EGT's slightly higher. When a diesel idles for a long time it starts running cool and inneficent witch is bad. If you have a need for it to idle for extended periods a high idle switch may not be a bad idea.

If i have been working my truck hard I will also let it idle for a minute-3 to cool the turbo and everything else down. The device i have allows me to do this too and shut off after what ever time I set. its called a turbolifesaver by brand name. its just a turbo timer......I think it was 250$ or so....
