Greetings, what, if any, diagnostic software is available for the Duramax? I use a diagnostic program for VW diesels which accesses the ECM via the OBDII port. This allows me to check injection timing as well as other sensors that affect the engine's operation.

I believe GMC and Ford are using the CANBUS networks in their newer vehicles. It would be nice to be able to diagnose/troubleshoot problems without having to go in to the dealer.

Not a tech, but perhaps I can offer some ideas based on my research here.

GM uses a device called the Tech II that plugs into the OBD II port and can basically do everything. They are about $2800.00...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif

Some of the better aftermarket scanners, i.e. SnapOn will do most of it. They are about $800.00

Some of the aftermarket power programmers can read and erase both ECM and TCM codes, some only do the ECM and some are read only without the ability to erase.

For laptops, the one I seem to see mentioned most is AutoTap, but you'll need the adapters for the port and the software has limited functionality. Check their website for info on them:

I'll be watching this thread, but so far it looks to me like you need a Tech II in order to do it all.

So has anyone reverse-engineered the Tech II yet? I use Auterra software (http://www.auterraweb.com) for my gas powered vehicles and it's OK.

I'm just thinking it would be such a time saver and pro-active in getting problems identified and resolved. Additionally, it could help identify problems that others haven't thought to be an issue, i.e., failing MAF & MAP sensors and their affect to engine power. Balance between cylinders is a quick check to identify weak or failing injectors.

With the Tech II you can also buy software from Vetronx which will add programming capabilities. More money, of course.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Does anyone use the OBD-II software from www.obdii.com (http://www.obdii.com) ? I don't know what to look for necessarily, but would like something. I'd rather start out with something low cost to try it out. I probably wouldn't even use it that much, but it would be neat to play around with.

Thanks,
Dennis

I've been looking myself. There isn't much work being done with the Dmax at this time. At least not in the Free/cheap arena.

Well, D*mnit! Why doesn't someone want to give me what I want for free?

Thanks,

There are a couple utilities out there that allow you to tap the OBD2 data stream, even on the desiels. The problem is translating the data. I am hoping to intercept a Tech 2's conversation with the OBD2 port and learn a few things. First I have to come up with the rest of the money for the Tech 2http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Wish I could find a good data reference.
