I'm looking to either put a water or propane injection system on my truck. I'm mainly doing it for lower egt's, but want a little power bump too. I know a guy with a unit he took off his old truck that I can get for about the same price as the Snow water unit, so price isn't an issue.

I'm in the dark about the pros and cons of each system, so I need some help. Which setup do you think is better, and why?

I dont have experience from either, but propane is a fuel, so I dont think it is going to help your egts any. Water/meth, should cool your egts some and give you a little bump in power. There are several on here with pane and a few runnin water.

I'm running my own water injection kit and had good luck with it. Both power and egt's. Found a few tricks along the way though that make a huge difference

lly101,

Care to share some of the details? Where are you injecting the water at?

Just before the EGR valve

In the intake just before the EGR valve

It's great that water could help keep EGT's under control. Are there any negatives to using water/meth (in moderation)?

Is this something that like nitrous, you adjust to greater injection levels until you clean up the black smoke?

Seems like a water/meth could be less costly alternative to nitrous, just trying to understand the tradeoffs... does anyone sell kits that a novice diesel enthusiast could install/adjust without popping a head gasket??

Water/meth isn't exactly like nitrous, it can clean up some but not much. The water makes the intake air cooler(reduces egt's) and the methanol is actually more fuel. I have seen it used with nitrous on a truck.

Snow Performance sells a kit. http://www.snowperformance.net/ (http://www.snowperformance.net/)

What about propane, does it lower egt's too?

OK....SOMEONE EDUCATE THE IGNORANT....what the heck is water injection and where does it go and and and and any other info would be nice

Water/Meth is a old system used by tractors and big rigs for cooling the engine. The proccess is rather simple. You inject water or water/methonol mixture through a jet at a very high pressure (120-220 psi) to atomize it in to the intake track after the turbo to get the water or water/meth mixture to wick away the heat in the combustion chamber. The mist that is injected turns into steam in the chamber on ignition and some what absorbs the heat. Care must be taken when doing this system though. A little to much and you can lift the head with the pressure and blow a head gasket. I know. Methonol also causes detonation in our engines if used in large amounts. You must jet the injection according to the amout of fuel and air you are passing. It will turn the black smoke gray. You can set the system up to come on with a required amount of boost pressure with a hobbs switch. This is way you gwet the cooling effect before the EGTs get to high and it won't stay on so long as to flood the engine when not on boost. If it is activated after the EGTs are in the warning zone, the cooling effect isn't as good, and temps can keep rising. Edited by: Super Diesel

So SD, was it the driver's side head that came up on yours?

Though I'm not 100% sure, I believe it was the passenger side.
