: Were and what is my EGR valve??
rmkleman 01-02-2007, 10:05 AM Sorry, i know supid question right? I am not mechanicaly inclined by any means but i was just running over some older posts and i see a lot of people asking were it is on their trucks... what does the egr valve do and why would one want to unplug it?
Spartus 01-02-2007, 11:28 AM EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve.
It recycles exhaust gases back into the intake.
EGR = Does not apply to the LB7, as we do not have one the last I knew.
Tolliwacker 01-02-2007, 11:30 AM Exhaust gas recirculation valve, "IF" your truck is equiped with one, it will be located on the top of the engine on the passenger side, below the intercooler duct. it does what the name implies, it recirculates the exhaust back through the intake for emmisions purposes. You would want to unplug the vacum and put a blocker plate behind it to keep the excess soot out of the intake and oil.
For the 2003, there is no fingerstick to block the codes if you were to unhook it, so you would be seeing a CEL all the time.
My 03 has the EGR, but not all 03's had one, only the california emmissions trucks had them, or the cali equiped since mine lived in Texas all its life until I brought it to Florida
yellowroket 01-02-2007, 01:03 PM if you ever get EFI live you can disable it (more like bypass it by setting it up to open at a high rpm that the truck will never see) and you wont have a check engine light.
rmkleman 01-02-2007, 01:18 PM So why would i want to disable it even if i had it... im just curious is there a power gain or something?
BudTX 01-02-2007, 01:49 PM It keeps exhaust gas (read: soot) from recirculating back into your engine.

If you run EFI live, does that mean I would not have to block and finger? I just drove my truck home and have less than 50 miles on it. I'm going to order a 4 in cat back for it. I would rather go with a front pipe back but don't want to screw with warranty. I don't have a good read on the dealer yet.

My response was misunderstood. The EGR recirculates exhaust back into your motor (hence the name). Disabling and/or blocking it off keeps that recirculation from occurring.

Tolli, can you take a picture of yours? I'd like to make sure I don't have one, and from what I see in the area of the motor, I'm not sure what I'm looking at.
Thanks :) .

You have an LB7, which does not have an EGR.
Tolliwacker 01-03-2007, 04:02 PM haunruh,
I will take a picture of mine and post it.
It has been discussed in depth before on this forum that the LB7 Does not have an EGR valve, Well the people that say it does not have an EGR valve are badly misinformed. The cali equipped trucks with the LB7 do have an EGR valve, and I will post a picture to prove it, along with the area to show you where it is. Give me a day or so to get a digital camera.
WanaDmxsub 01-03-2007, 10:30 PM Here is a pic of my LB7 with an EGR...
tophog 01-03-2007, 10:42 PM Because it's a CA emission truck?

Exactlly... same as mine.
Tolliwacker 01-03-2007, 11:10 PM WanaDmxSub,
That is exactly like mine, so there you go haunruh!
WanaDmxsub 01-04-2007, 12:12 AM Because it's a CA emission truck?
Yes, I also believe that there is a state back east that required them...IIRC...
Exactlly... same as mine.
Finally...we meet again...my long :D lost brother with the LB7 EGR
WanaDmxSub,
That is exactly like mine, so there you go haunruh!
NO...Could it be??? LB7 EGR Triplets??? :D
Just havin' some fun, don't get mad or take it personal...one day I'll say say something and you can pay me back...;)
TOTHEMAX! 01-04-2007, 12:19 AM hunh, i thought all lb7's didnt have them. ill have to look on mine to see if i got one! what states required you to have them?
haunruh 01-04-2007, 01:28 AM WanaDmxsub, thanks a lot. I bought mine used so you never really know what it came with.

I always forget about the "special" trucks in Kalifornia. :)

I recently installed a 4" MBRP front pipe back. I ordered the cat delete pipe and cat back system seperately. The cat came out really easy and will go back in just as easy if I need to bring it to the dealer. The key is to connect the front pipe to the rest of the exhaust with a band clamp (available at NAPA for around $10) That way you can drop the pipe and install the cat in about 30 minutes including roll-out and roll-up.
Good luck.
WanaDmxsub 01-04-2007, 10:28 PM Mine has been to the dealer a couple of times with out the CAT. If the dealer is that much of a $#@@%^ then I would defiantly find another. I have never had any issues with my down tube back 4" exhaust.

Agreed! no problems with the cat removed from my Cali. egr laden truck. I am having trouble with mine lately. I want to remove it cause I guess blocking does not take care of the problem on ours. I think a valve is sticking in mine. if I reset the code itwill not trip it again until I really jump on the throttle, then it codes again.
umr96 01-04-2007, 11:23 PM I was reading from Kennedydiesel that if you have the FE9 code in the glovebox, disconnecting the egr wont even throw a code. So my question is this: If the ECM only reads feedback from the MAF when the EGR valve is open, then shouldn't you be able to just disconnect the EGR and improve performance?
Thanks, I have an 04.5 LLY crew cab, totally stock.
WanaDmxsub 01-05-2007, 02:31 AM The EGR on the LB7's is vacuum actuated (yes we have a diesel with vacuum) (A pump really). I plugged mine at the valve and set a code the 2nd time I started it. Truck ran OK, with no noticeable difference, except for SES light shining in my eyes... IIRC, from 3 years ago, we decided that only the CA trucks set the code (SES light) and that the others didn't. Kennedy must have found the code for the non-CA EGR system.
Disabling the system should improve performance. Will you feel it set of the pants...I don't think so...but you might.
Current options for the LB7's are installing a blocker plate and getting a custom tune from one of the vendors or getting EFILive and doing your own tune. You could also research the parts and remove the entire EGR, I've heard that has been done also. You would still need to get a custom tune or EFI.
I have contemplated all of the above and decided that since I'm not building a race truck, that needs have every advantage I can squeeze out to beat the guy next to me, I'll just leave mine alone for now...
