Just baught a 2500HD with Duramax, Allison, etc. I wanted to know what the best way is to "break" it in. I've kept it below 75 so far, and have avoided the "romp on it" urge.
Should I change the oil more frequently, etc.
Any help would be appreciated.
That subject can cause quite a bit of controversy...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
I followed the recomendations found in the owner's manual which, among other things, state that you should not exceed 55 mph for the first 500 miles. Others here claim there is no reason to do what the manual recomends.
Most seem to agree that an early first oil change, somewhere between 500 and 2,000 or so miles, is a good idea, but you don't say how frequently you are talking about. Most of us have also found the rear differentials low on oil, and those with 4x4's, the front one as well.
There is also a lot of discussion about when, or if, synthetic oils may be used in the engine. Try a few seraches on different questions you might have and I think you'll be surprised at how much information you will be able to find.

It'll run so much better after you work it hard the first time. 940 miles on mine, changed oil/filter, and Ally spin-on, headed out on 2000 mile round trip to get my buds new boat. Unloaded down running F A S T , had 2 tanks of fuel average speed 79 mph. let me tell you, I found the shutdown more than once! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Smoked quite a few wanna-be's at speed! Coming back with 11,000 lbs. running 70-80. Using tow/haul in hill country...turning it off some in the flats. Only downshifted to 4th three or four times all the way back. It'll accelerate slowly up those long grades in O/D with 11K back there!!! This trip really woke this truck up I tell you...it runs noticibly stronger now, no BS. I ******in' http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Heart.gif this truck!
Yes, the grape juice is on the shelf for the post 1st big tow change-out. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gifEdited by: Rippem

Have had my LLY since 3-15-04. Dealer claimed it was the first LLY in the state. I doubt that, but might have been first in this area. Now have 14K on the odometer and just got back from first big trip pulling the camper, just under 2000 miles. Like others have said, the harder you work it, the better it seems to like it. Made 14.3 MPG with camper. Filled up today, 1st full tank after getting back, finally broke the 20 MPG mark. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif Still haven't lost the big grin from the first day I drove it.
