: Help! my door handle is broken

I need help removing the interior handle on my 95 Suburban. I can get the door panel off no problem, but that's when the job, looks like it gets very difficult. I saw what looked like rivets holding the door handle mechanism on, and that is when I decided to seek some professional advice. So what do you say? How do I get the handle off? Do I need to remove the steel doorplate as well as the plastic panel?

Simple. Once you remove the door panel, drill the rivet (drill size escapes me, its in service manual), release the rods off old handle, chuck old handle and install new one. the new one clicks in then slides forward to align rivet holes (thus rivet only keeps handle from moving toward the rear of the vehicle). get a new rivet from the dealer.

You do not have to remove the inner door. good luck !

Thanks Bob,

When I drill the rivet, does just the handle itself come off, or do I need to remove the whole mechanism including the lock?

Thanks,
John

Juancho,

how did you manage to get a replacement door handle?

Drivers side is broken on mine, and if you pull the door open with it, it will break out of the door (sooner or later). I always need both hands to open it ... :/

John, the handle assembly (includes handle pull, lock 'lift' and pivots, housing, etc)- there's a rod for handle and lock) will come out then you disconnect the rods.

Juancho,

thx, but I'm living in Germany, next what comes close to a Chevy dealer is 40 miles away, price is about EUR 160 per piece, plus shipping. Passenger side handle is bent, so I'd like to replace both handles.

But almost $400 for a pair of door handles is a bit much, unless they're made of gold, or silver at least :)

I've been without my drivers front handle for 2 years now, last month I lost the passenger front handle. I guess I'm waiting for all 4 to go, maybe I'll get a package discount. This certainly seems to be a common occurance with this style handle. My '91 Suburban hasn't lost one yet.

NAPA carries the handle in stock.

Sorry to hear the price you have to pay. I just replaced my drivers side interior door handle two months ago. It took about 30 minutes and the replacement part at the dealer was $26 and in stock, I was actually pleasantly suprised they weren't charging more, I was expecting $50-75 for it.

Its too bad you don't have a contact in US that could purchase and ship handles to you. Of course shipping may be expensive, I don't know.

ChevyDave,

I like your Burb. I basically have the exact same truck, only its a '95. How has the remote PMD worked out for you?

ChevyDave,

fortunately, there's someone in the US who's helping me with getting things shipped :) Unless the parts aren't too large, it shouldn't be a problem. I could buy some doorhandles somewhere, just will have to find them on the internet.

But the handles are of low priority, there are other things I need to fix/do first ...

Juancho,

It is the best. I mounted it in front of the radiator on the trans cooler support brackets and it is always cool or just slightly warm(I can send a pic if you'd like). The temp difference between that and where I just moved it from (the firewall next to the brake hydro booster) is huge. I thought of putting it in the hole in the bumper but I decided if I had a minor fender bender it would probably destroy the PMD and leave me stranded.
