I've had opposing opinions on this, so maybe I can get some other opinions here. Have a '82 6.2L "J", sm465 tranny, 3.73 dually rear. Engine right about 160,000 miles. Good oil pressure, very reliable, no problems. If I were to add a turbo kit, would I be asking for trouble? One opinion says no, another says I'll burn up the rings? Are there any diagnostics, like compression test, etc, I should do before hand to avoid problems, etc. Opinions, and suggestions, please. Thanks

IMO it would be fine. You do need to make sure your CDR system is operating correctly. If it's healthy now a turbo won't hurt it. It actually helps the efficiency and improves longevity IF driven within it's engine operating limits (EGT's 1100 deg F, engine water temp, etc.). You would NEED to install a EGT and boost guage.
The compression should be close to 400 psi (ideally above) and consistent between cylinders (10% or so).

I personally would not add a turbo to my 6.2L if a new turbo were given to me free. You can't boost the pressure much without blowing a head gasket so why bother. If you put 18 to 1 compression pistons in the engine then a turbo would work great for a 6.2L engine.

CougarJohn,
Many successful turbo installs on the 6.2, won't blow unless some other underlying prior engine problem, it does require gauges and self control to not try to overdo the new found power, the 6.2 is the parent design of the 6.5 turbo running at 21:1 compression ratio.

Yachtcare,
I just installed a turbo system on my '81 6.2L conversion a couple of months ago. I've got about 120,000 miles on the stock rebuilt engine. I've logged over 4000 miles since then, including an 1800 mile trip with my RV in tow. I hit a max. of 15 psi on the boost guage and 1100 degrees on the pyro. No engine problems whatsoever. I wouldn't hesitate about installing a turbo on your engine.
