I

I purchased a 2001 GMC 2500HD with the Duramax Engine, 42K miles, Allison Tranny, ect,ect.. I have been having some problems with an engine surge issue. It doesn’t seem to matter if the engine is cold or hot, but when I first start it up and drive away, there seems to be a little hesitation, and then it really kicks in, almost to the point of being dangerous </v:stroke></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:ulas></v:path><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shape></v:imagedata></v:shape>. The surging happens when idling and at low RPM's, in and out of gear.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and would the fix be covered under the 100K warrantees?

Thanks

There have been several improvements made to the Fuel Pressure Regulator since 2001. The older styles can wear and stick which will result in surging at idle. The newest ones have a coating added to reduce the wear. This part is covered under the 100K warranty.

I have a 2003 and I have the same issues, it normally happens when I first start moving, usaully in the parking garage. If I didn't catcg it a couple of times I would of hit a parked or moving car.

Thanks for the posts. I took the truck into the local GMC dealer and they install three PCM updates. It runs much betterhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big%20Smile.gif, but still fluctuates at idle. They told me that the RPM's are changing only 20 RPM's and that is still within specs.

I have a 03 that had a slight surge, I brought it to the dealer and they said it was the fuel pressure regulator, said it was within specs but they replaced anyway, tech said it was common, but more of a nussance than anything else.

I had the problem. I add Stanadyne Performance Formula once a month, now no more problem. I just tried Shell DFA that works also.

My 01 Duramax/Allison combo surged also. It has 85,000 miles on it. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator on the pump and that cured the surge. You could notice the surge mostly at idle, and sometimes at low rpms while in gear. The regulators are expensive, I think I paid around $425 for the part.

Good luck, Bill

sorry, but what are we meaning by surging??? like rpm spiking up w/out any throttle action?

Surging means that the engine RPM's fluctuates up and down, whether it is at idle or light acceleration.

<DIV>Is the additive the way to go or simply replacing the regulator?</DIV>

Just got the regulator replaced this past week, and runs like a top again. I had to pay the $100 deductable and GM paid the rest..
