Brfore I go to the dealer and get robbed I wanted to get some feedback from you guys. I was sick for a week and did not drive my truck for 6 days. It just sat in the driveway in the cold. When I got in it today to go to work it started no problem, but I had no breaks or power steering??? It was as if the car was turned to on, but not running and you try to break or steer it. Could these be two seperate problems or one problem. Can it be a vacume leak somewhere? Does power steering run on vacume? The last time I drove the truck, there were no problems at all, no noises, nothing??? Any help would be great. Thanks guys.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

your brakes and power steering run off the same pump ... your power steering pump ... check the fulid level may it leaked out ...or maybe frozen ?? Either way they both run off the same pump ... check your belt too.

Thanks for all your help.

FWIW they covered my power steering pump when I sheared the shaft and I was over 36,000 but under 100,000. They also said it was a major safety concern and thus provided me with a free loaner until the pump was replaced. Rare but good dealership service on that one!

try prying on the pump pulley....if it broke the pump shaft like jmg343 stated, itll come out..

Also, if for some reason the dealership will not warranty this item. Dont be scared to find one on your own and do the swap yourself. It is very easy and will save you some dough. You can find these pumps new or used relatively easy and often for less than 100$.

Yeah, I can confirm on the stealer costs. When mine went out (the PS that is), dealer wanted something like $750 to fix it. I went to Auto Zoo and got me another one, took about 3-4 hours to intall the new one (and a six pack :D ) and issues solved. Good luck to ya!

If it is not the sheared pump shaft, There was another person on here had a problem and let me see if I can find it, but it sounded like it was a stuck check valve, and I have not seen a system diagram, but I bet there is one in the system and it sounds like it is stuck.

I think the guy just turned the steering wheel side to side while engine running, and it freed up.

Let me see if I can find it.....

Thanks guys for all your help. As soon as i get home today i'm going to give it a crack. See what's wrong with it. Thanks a lot. If the pump needs to be replaced, is that a big job? can i do it myself?

Ok fellas, here's the the verdict. I started the truck up and let it warm up for about 10 minutes. I brought the RPM's up to 2000-2200 or so and turned the wheel gently. After like 2 seconds it broke free. I suppose that it was a stuck check valve in the power steering pump? But anyway it's fixed. Thank you all for this great advise. Everytime I have a problem with the truck I come to this site and get advise on how to fix it, and so far yo people have never been wrong. GREAT ADVISE ALL. THANK YOU.
HAPPY NEW YEAR.

There is a recall on some of the booster pumps for the 2005. This is what my dealer told me. He said that mine would have to be replaced when ever my truck got back to the mainland, since it requires a speacial tool, and he only has one. If mine does break, believe me they will fly out here to fix it, or send my truck to the mainland. HA.

diesels do not use vacuum. Look for vacuum lines under your hood.

If they do they have an external vacuum pump like my 7.3 Ford had. Only thing I had to replace 3 times.

Well just got back from dinner with the woman, took the truck, no problems at all. I guess problem solved??? Power steering and brakes worked well. I drove about 40 miles total without any problems. Oh well, if it ever happens again at least I'll know where to start looking. Thanks again fellas.

It will most likely do it again, and next time it could be while you're driving it. Mine did. Don't take a chance, call the dealer.;)

Finally took the truck into the dealer today. The PS pump failed 3 times in the last week. Reving the engine above 2000 rpm seemed to temporarily fix the problem, possible stuck valve?. Problem usually occurred first thing in the morning after sitting overnight, but did not seem temprature related. Pump would run OK for the rest of the day.

Dealer ran tests on the pump:

Flow Spec 3.5 to 3.9 gal/min - tested at 2.4 gpm

Pressure Spec 1425 to 1525 psi - tested at 1165 psi

Pump volume and pressure is low

Dealer replaced the pump under warrantee.
