: Injector Balance +/- question

OK, I know it will run worse SOON but riddle me this...I have a Feb. '01 build date that has run great for 65K...all stock...losts of PM(oil/filt/5K's, OE fuel and air filts/10K's 2micCat Pre-filt.recently, Transfluid/filt20K's, coolant flush, belt tensioner) no trips to the "big house"(GMdealer) no reflashes(GM).

I regularly check my injector balance rate during PM. Up until 5K-10K ago all were sub +/- 1-2. This summer #2 injector began its decline(or should I say increase). In 5-10K went into the +2-3 range to a few weeks ago to +4-5 and today was +7-8!!! Strange thing is that it still runs smooth/good and yielded 19.4 on the last tank of fuel...BUT yes I know it's going. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

I took it to a local GM commercial service house where I talked with the tech and the commercial sevice manager. They wrote up an RO and told me they'd call me when they had me eight new injectors in stock. (know there's a backorder) so looks like I've found a good shop in my area pending repair.(easy to deal with so far). http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Question for Eric, Sid etc....Does high fuel return on the + side mean that the injector is fouled/not opening fully rather than leaking? NO fuel in crankcase (look/smell) and NO SES/MIL light but really high numbers. Just curious about the + vs. - in the numbers. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

Thanks, Andy

I too would like to know the answer to this question. In my case though, tonight my #2 was hitting+15! The dealer is waiting for direction from GM as to what to do next. Mine does smoke and gets a heavy diesel odor in the cab. I assumed that it was over fueling but I am not 100% on this.

Sorry to leach off your guys post but I just bought me a snapon scanner with a used 01 cartrage. I checked my balance rates and am just unsure about what I am seeing. I get .4 to .7 with it bouncing around a bit between there at idle. Most of em and most of the time its in the .5 range acording to the read out. I didnt see and - so I assume its all positive #'s. are the nubers you guys reporting whole numbers or are you guys saying you are geting a decimal and you guys are just droping the decimal....or am I just reading the damn thing wrong or looking at the wrong screen? Oh joy new fun tools to play withhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif TIA

the numbers could vary up to +/- 6.0. This is allowable per GM. If your over/under that, then something is causign the injector to put more fuel in or take it out. a - number shows its pulling fuel away, and a + number means its putting more in.
