: What upgrades should I do?

I just bought a 2003 GMC Duramax with the Ally trans. The truck is gonna be an everyday driver, but I want something to the extreme that if I wanna hook to a sled at my local fair or maybe burn some goats, I am not gonna bring disapointment on my fellow GM fanshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif. I borrowed a buddies Edge w/ Attitude and tried it out. I liked it pretty well but just didn't know what was the best to do. So pretty much I just need some suggestions for the motor and tranny upgrades? If you need anymore details on what I expect to do with it just let me know.

Thanks

For max power from ONE power enhancement people are saying the TTS Extreme program puts out the most HP. Of course you will need to upgrade the tranny to a Suncoast or ATS tranny. I have the Hot Juise/Attitude and its all I need with a Suncoaut Level II tranny upgrade.

If your towing all the time, I'd suggest a six-gun with the safety features and the power it brings down low. From what you want to do though, it sounds like you might be happier with the Edge/Attitude. First suggestion though is to change the exhaust. This will help with any programmer and lower your EGT's. You should be OK on the tranny unless you want to do more than this. Then it gets to be time to break out the $$$.

I have heard a lot about the six gun but never seen it in action. Are there any other boxes that allow you to adjust power levels on the fly besides the banks and edge? What about that TTS extreme Bassin was talking about? Also what all would the transmisson shift improver help on? would it help the tranny deal with a little more power or just effect the shifts? Last thing...what about the top speed limiter, how do I get more than 97mph outta my rig?

Rayan,

Tell us how much you are willing to spend. Key word right there is, willing. These trucks can be a everyday driver up to 700 HP. The only difference in a 700 HP truck and yours is the power adjustment. 700 is nitro, payne or water meth on top of a programmer...... most of the time. These guys generally have about 8 to 10k invested into "fast" parts. However, if you just want to have a 400+ everyday driver you'll need a few things. First, you'll need to know when your truck is warm and how long it needs to cool off, this will save your turbo & motor for the long haul. That means you need guages, no matter what you get. Second, know where you want the extra power. The board here seems to lean towards the "on the fly" adjustable programmers. You will want to read many, many, many posts on the different kinds. However, if you want the highest HP out of one box --->go to TTS (http://www.ttspowersystems.com/pl2.htm) and get almost 500 HP out of one box. However, I would suggest the EDGE box (up to 450 HP) if you wanted everything in one package, guages and adjustable power. Now that you have all this power... it'll needs to get to the ground without grinding away "inside" your tranny. Once you have the power programs you desire.....call SunCoast (http://www.suncoastconverters.com) down in Ft. Walton Florida so that you can "get' her done". They know how to disable the 97 MPH part.

little advice....... not all OEM Allison 1,000's are built the same. If you do chose a programmer and decide to run it at or above 90 all the time..... look out.

that's my .02 worth on short order.

Hotjuice attitude is a great combo if you dont mind upgrading the trany and all around package but its not the top performer for power and it dosnt zap the speed limiter.

TTS extream is also adjustable on the fly but its lowest setting is a 80hp IIRC. It zaps the speed limiter. It also is supposed to put down the most power.

Depending on what you want you may need 2 boxes. If you go extream be prepared for some wait and also you will need to pay extra I believe to get an extra chip for your truck, unless you dont care if you can go back to stock or cant go lower than 80 HP. I would recomend keeping your chip though and buying the extream so you can go back to stock if need be.

And if you really want to whoop up on some people throw some n2o on herehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

The Sun Coast level 3 kit is pretty popular here and is what I have. I did it myself. ATS is well liked by some but others have found that they dont like it. Or you could get a suncoast level 4 or 5 but that dosnt come in kit form, you have to buy the trany fully assemebeled.

An ATS trany gets rid of the speed limiter. A suncoast trany does not, it remains in tact. Some people buy a seperate tuner like a predator or a quad box and stack with it and use it to zap the limiter too, another option. There is a free way to nuke the limiter but I think it kills your speedo.....do search, it may be in the DIY?

OK I have been looking at all of the stuff everyone has been telling me. So far I kinda like the TTS box, I found out is has an economy stage of 30ho and a tow of 80hp, then you have the 120 and 200. I don't completely understand about the extreme though, if it is unhooked does it still zap the speed limiter or am i gonna hafta hook it up to another programmer and restore it to factory settings? So say for instance I go with the TTS, 4" Ext, Cold air intake, and maybe a small shot of N2O...would the suncoast stage 3 hold it or would I hafta look elsewhere for gettin the job done. I dont really want to purchase a whole tranny from somewhere. I would rather have the parts installed by a trusted mechanic. I read some posts about the ATS systems, a lot of people see to think that the ATS systems wear out trannies, even with the copilot...is this true? If so where do i have to turn for parts?

I believe that if you want the extream you get 3 power settings. 80 120 and the extream witch is in the 230 range. You dont unhook a tts chip, it is a chip that you swap out your stocker for, your limiter will always be zaped(you can have Steve move it to were ever you want I believe) while you have the chip in. If you yank it out and put the stock chip back in your 100% stock. to get the economy setting you need to get the lower hp chip and dont get the extream

Most believe there is no gain to be had from afteremarket filters/intakes.

The stage 3 seems to be handling a small shot and the extream.

........ermm, the SunCoast can x out the speed limmiter... but it depends on which one you get. Just call Joe down at the shop.

If you want the best thing out ... get the extream. However, get the tranny FIRST. Temptation of an Extream will overcome your ability to resist...... trust me on this. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif Keep your OEM PCM and get the full package from Steve.

Again with the tranny..... I would sugest that you get either the Stage V SunCoast or equivalent transmission. The fact that you have mentioned the TTS and the desire to purchase, with nothing else mentioned, tells me that you're most likely going to smoke anything other than a STAGE V SunCoast transmission.

of course.... I could be wrong? --> BTW..... how much are you willing to spend on the truck upgrades?

where would be the cheapest place i could purchase a suncoast stage IV or V tranny. Ill be goin to the Sheid diesel estravaganza. would they have em there. I dont mind sppending the money i would just like to keep the tranny mods under $4000...if i can. cause i have learned from everyone on here that power is no good if you cant get it to the ground. I ordered the transgo shift kit just i round up the money to do the suncost. should the transgo help me out a little for the time being?

Burner, not doubting ya, just curioushttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

You are going to have to pull the trany and pull apart 1/2 the trans to do the install of the shift kit and with the removal and reinstall of the trans you are looking at 80% of the work. I would put a new converter and new frictions/steels in it while i was there(read stage 3 suncoast). The factory converter will start slipping the lock up in short order, hell a regular juice can slip the stock converter in 5th gear. Converter is one of the biggest $ items.

Remember with the stage 4-5 trans that you also need to buy a converter. And ATS fully assembeled trans is priced without a converter IIRC.

Cheapest place to buy a trans? I duno, suncoast sets the price and dealers get in lotsa trouble if they sell for less from what i have been told. I didnt care about price though, I bought my trans stuff the same way I buy the rest of my parts, from the guys that are there helping me and there for me to call on thier cell on a sunday asking WTF do I do now? (Thanks Mike L.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif) I dont buy for the outright cheapest price

You wont be able to get a converter and stage 4 or 5 for under 4k. Are you willing to do the install of the kit or the install of the new trans?

Mike L is pretty up on the suncoast stuff, shoot him a PM or give him a call. He is very helpfull.

Rayan,

Let us know if you're going "stupid power" or just dumb power. What about drag racing...any of that? If you are into "exploreing" the limmitations....... save a little extra cash and get every thing you can for the tranny. BTW, have you seen the warranty on a SunCoast Level 5? Unless you are very proficent with the Allison....... let a pro do it or at least walk you in and out.

Remember, the transmission is the foundation on which you build your power. Destroy the foundation and you'll be... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Bear in mind there is no "free lunch" here. You boost the engine output considerable and it will have some effect on overall service life of unit. No matter what anybody claims the engine and Allision will not last as long at the 500 and and above HP level and using it at that level a lot as it will at a reasonable stock output level or with a mild boosts to output.
