: Fuel Gage Reads High

I normally drive at 1000 ft above sea level. When I drive up into the mountains (8000 ft), fill up, and return to the valley, my fuel gage reads high. I'll have 300 miles on the tank and the gage reads full. This error gradually goes away after a few fill ups. Any ideas? The truck has 19000 miles on it.Edited by: Intelpig

Silver Bullet was in the montains in Colorado and the same thing happened to him. It might be pressure built up(or the reverse suction) in the tank causing the fuel reader to stick.

The angle of the truck causes the gauge to read high or low iirc nose up reads high and down reads low.The opposite is happening to you so Bassin may have it right.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Thanks for replies. I have tried removing the fuel cap and venting the tank to no effect. I'll try it again with the engine running.

Interesting. I was up near Flagstaff (7000ft) a few weeks ago, and noticed the same high tank reading. After returning to PHX (1100 ft) and filling to full, it has read correctly. Thought it was just me.

I was having the same problem, sometimes accurate, sometimes not, took it to the dealer and a test showed a faulty sender, the S/W said GM has a new part for this because it has been a problem, it is a special order and I'm still waiting. Hope this helps.

Theres a TSB about inaccurate fuel senders.

Thanks all. It seems to have cleared up this time after 2 fillups. I'll refer to your inputs when the time comes for service. Edited by: Intelpig

My fuel gage continued to read high after trips to the mountains. Then one day the gage pegged way high (pointing 90 degrees past "F"), then went back to normal 2 days later. Midway Chevy replaced the sender. :D
