So who's used them and has an opinion. I plow and get no respect so i'm hoping these will gain a little attention for the traffic around me. I was thinking about surface LED strobes because of ease of wiring but i like the clean look in the headlights because they are hidden.

What do i look for??
Are they tricky to install, having to drill into the light housings??
How much $$

TIA,

I have whelen's on mine. Drilled the back-up light and the headlight housing. You have to run wireing to all four corners but not difficult. I put the controller on the floor under the back seat. Get a high wattage unit. They are really bright and do get attention when you need it.

I see a lot of 60 wt and 90 wt units with strobes that rangue from 10 wt and up. What are you running??

I like the idea of the central wiring and hidden quality, but the LEDs don't require a switchboard to operate, just 12v. I hate the idea of a switchboard, do you have a toggle on/off or a switchboard with yours??

If you just want to make the head lights wig wag or maybe the fog lights (though pry wont help with a plow on the front) You can buy relays (type wig wag lights into ebay or google) and just wire realays and a switch into your current lights. The amber lightbars get no attention and respect anymore. Seems everyone (because of there relative cheapness) runs aroudn with them and leaves them on alot of times when no necessary. Tow trucks, plows, garbage truck, cable truck, teen "hillbilly wannabees" all put them on their trucks and leave them on. Myabe they all need them and shoudl have them on but so many of htem makes them redundant and not stick out like they sued to.

I run (2) Whelen TIR3 LEDs on my front bumper and Able-2 Hide-a-ways in all four corners. I'll be honest with you, the LEDs are really the way to go. They draw almost nothing (3 amps each), they have like 9 built in flash patterns in their own built in flasher, they emit no heat at all, and they're simple to install. They also last damn-near forever and are durable as a bastid. I highly recommend doing all LEDs.

BTW, if you really want to be seen, go with color. My LEDs are blue. :D

Not in Wisconsin, that would cost you a big fine and maybe a visit to the local cell block...... red/blue police only, red/white emergency, red/amber tow truck, amber for everything else.

Even Here In Ny...anything But Amber And You Could Get A Free Ride In A Cop Car....clear Strobes In Your Headlights And Tail Lights Are Kind Of A Grey Area...odds Are If You Are Using Them As Intended For Example Road Construction Or As Hazzards And Warning Lights You Won't Get Bothered...but Run Down The Road With Them On For No Reason Other Than People Getting Out Of Your Way....and Thats When You Will Probly Get A Ride In The Cop Car...

I've got a full hide-a-way system installed. My 01 I had a Whelen 90w and it was nice, had tons of patterns and was bright. Problem I had was power supply had to be in the cab and we just don't have much space. I also had water issues with the connectors.

This truck I have a tomar neobe water proof system. Power supply is potted metal, sealed up and water proof. I have it installed under the hood, so all the leads do not have to come into the cab. It also have weather pack connectors an I have had not one hiccup! It doesn't have as many patterns, but it is bright.

I also have a magnet mount mini led light bar. Brand new this year, so I don't have an opinion of it yet, but it has tons of patterns and is bright.

I persoanlly think some amber strobe LED's will do the trick. We install them in a lot of the highway pickup trucks here at work and they come out pretty nice and are real attention grabbers. I think trucklite.com has a good selection, whelen does too. Like Hemisrslow said...anything else but amber in NY will get you a free ride to jail

I've had strobes (Tomar) on all 4 corners on my truck, and to tell you the truth, they drove me nuts after a few hours of plowing. The bright flashes bouncing off my Fisher yellow plow and the snow that was falling was pissing me off to the point where I shut them down unless I was plowing a busy commercial lot.
I didn't bother putting the strobes back on my truck after I replaced it.

Oh blue is definitely not legal at all, but it's more about who you know than what you know. I would sure as hell look into LEDs, though, as they are worlds better than strobes, IMO.

Unless in ontario. Blue is the colour for snow plowing.
I'd like to get some amber hidden strobes for my truck, maybe in the summer. Use them as dual purpose.

A few things...Do some research. Strobes are not appropriate for plowing...imagine getting flashed by a Camera flash several times a second in a snow storm...not good.

Use LEDs...which are a different flash. You may need to go to a lightbar, or other warning device. I would not reccommend drilling into the headlight houseing unless you were doing Emergency response or Police work.

PM me with ???. I installed them semi-professionally for my volly buddies back in the day.

I would DEF get the gen 3 LED's. i have them on my truck and they are supper bright and use very little power. when i am on the side of the road traffic can see them from far away and i feel they give me the best warning power.

Another place to check out is www.PlowSite.com because the majority of all users on that site have some type of warning light setup. There are hundreds of discussions of this sort on that forum.

So answer me this....I was on the freeway the other day and a guy in a pickup was merging into traffic...It seemed like hey would tap his brake lights twice and his hidden strobes would do a little one flash...Everytime he changes lanes it looked like tap the brakes twice and then the flash...It was enough to make you look but not be obscene...I kinda liked it.

Are there some trick little patches you can do with whelen strobes??

Amber LEDs in your grill. Unless you are an emergency vechile (in Michigan anyway) you cannot run red, white or blue.

Leds are really bright, no heat, low amp draw they are sweet. I have a code3 led lightbar and leds in my grill. They move traffic well.

getting ready to add some LED's to my truck as well. Volunteer fire fighter and here we are allowed red and white. Have to have 360* coverage, so going to have to spend a few dollars to get it done right. Should be nice when it is all done.

Sure...wire up your whelen strobe pack to your brake light switch. Pick a slow pattern, and viola!
