Is the standard K & N air filter the same for the LLY as the LB7?? My son works @ Checker Auto and they have no info in their system for the LLY yet. Wanna get the right one. Thanks in advance.

Personally, I have never seen significant power gains by switching to K&N's on late model GM engines.

In any case, you are best off bringing in your old filter to compare just in case.

You ought to read the results of the air filter tests on another thread here before you go rushing out to replace your AC Delco paper filter...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

I use the AFE pro guard 7 filter. Supposed to be very good.

What Zeeb said...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Those K&N dollars would be the start to a down payment on a Juice which is substantial performance improvement.

To answer your ? the replacement element is the same. I have not noticed a differance till you put the complete kit on, tube and all. I have ran the complete kit on my 01 for over 130,000 miles and had a blown head gasket fixed at 160,000 and the mechanic said the motor looked brand new.

I have one with less than 100 miles that you can have for what I paid for it at Summit Racing in Akron Ohio and I would pay the shipping.

HOWEVER......there is currently controversy regarding air filters (K&N etc) that use oil in the filtration media. GM claims that the oil is causing issues with mass air flow sensors and other electronic sensors and will not warranty them (mass airflow sensors etc) if a K&N (or other filter is present) is present. K&N is trying to refute this.

I have seen the GM bulletin stating this and promptly removed from my truck. The tech bulletin did not name specifics, just an all inclusive description.

Just letting everyone know.

I have also been warned about this from my dealer. I just don't over oil and I have never had a problem. All 4 of my trucks have had K & N's .

That is true about the "over oiling". The tech bulletin says "excessively oiled". HOWEVER..we are all subject to judgement calls....so at this point I am being cautious, maybe overly so, until I make sure there is nothing else going to go wrong with my truck (see post about 1200 miles and engine issues).

I did read (and take no credit for this solution, just don't remember who to give credit to) that mass airflow sensors can be cleaned. Electronic equipment cleaner (maybe denatured alcohol or similar product) can be sprayed onto the sensor (just don't touch it) and then gently blown dry (canned air once again from an electronic store, not 150 psi from the air compressor)

we are at 1500 miles now and I am starting to hear the engine smoothing out. I am breaking it in by taking "day trips". Hoping for the mileage to come up now.

My brother-in-laws Kenworth is getting as good mileage as some of the folks are posting about the new LLY getting. He is getting 13+ out of his "expeditor" rig (this is a full size truck with the rails stretched and a 20-sum foot box put on the back behind the sleeper)
