: Christmas came early this year!
GlenRoseFireFighter 12-21-2006, 06:15 PM My wife and I decided to buy a travel trailer. See pics... I do have a question about towing it. It's a 28ft trailer and I was wondering if it's bad to tow with cruise control? Also, I noticed that the gears were way taller in TOW/HAUL mode and I have to get to 65mph or it'll sit at 2500rpm in 5th...normal? Any tricks/suggestions you guys have. I'm open.
GlenRoseFireFighter 12-21-2006, 06:17 PM also, are there after market telescoping mirrors available for the 01 LB7? Will other year Duramax's telescoping mirrors work? Anyone have a pair they want to get rid of? Suggestions where to buy?

I always leave it in OD and cruise control until the trans starts to hunt for different gears then I just put it in tow haul. Seems to work great for me.

I would think they would work if the wiring is available. The new ones that look like the furd mirrors should work also but they have to be moved in and out by hand.
Congrats on the new home away from home. :)

thanks for the OD advice and where can I get the manual telescoping mirrors?
blnagel 12-21-2006, 06:32 PM For mirrors I got the TTT mirrors and LOVE them. They are a great add on and look good too.

They're an option for the new trucks so the dealer would be able to get them for you, but check some of the sponsors of this site to see if they can help and maybe get a better deal.

where did you get yours?
blnagel 12-21-2006, 06:50 PM Internet. I think Kennedy diesel sells them. If I needed new mirrors, I would get the same.
gmc851 12-21-2006, 07:09 PM Check in the for sale section Kennedy diesel or E-bay for the mirrors. I had the electric extend on my 04 and I never liked them. I got the manual extend with the 06 and they give you a great view. Look in my garage for pics. They are also availible from http://www.gmpartsdirect.com I tow a 9500lb fifth wheel and all I do is put it in tow/haul and set the cruise control. If I have to climb a big hill I'll pull it out of cruise and throttle it myself. The programing on these trucks is amazing, if it wasn;t for the wife I could take a nap while behind the wheel. I just re-read your post didn't see you have an 01 so the trans. tow/haul thing might be different. Your son sure looks happy sitting there on the bunk, wait until things fall "accidently" from above on your daughter, "honest dad it slipped from my hand!" Ah the fun of camping. Congrats on the new trailer. Merry Christmas!!!!!!
Timberwolf530 12-21-2006, 07:15 PM For your mirrors, keep an eye on the For Sale Section on this site, they come up in there every once in awhile. Also have seen them on Ebay.
Diesel Dually 12-21-2006, 07:29 PM Get the '06 mirrors...you WILL not be sorry. Do a search...there is plenty of info including a how-to-wire them tutorial in the Electrical section.
PM me if you need help...I put them on my '02 they look and work great!!!
DMAX154 12-21-2006, 07:37 PM I have a 28 footer and I have only towed it a short distance home from the dealer and I was able to hold about 73 mph going up a long gradual hill and I also am certain I was below 2500 RPMs With the Banks on 3. That was before the Speed Loader.
ABQFirefighter 12-21-2006, 07:50 PM Look in my garage. I have the CIPA mirrors. They have great visibility for towing.

x2
I got mine on ebay, but you can get them from Kennedy too. Check out my garage for pics. If you like your mirrors to be level, get the TTT's, if you don't care if they slant up to the sky then get the '06's..

I wasn't saying that I couldn't get it past 65mph...I was saying that I noticed it didn't shift into 5th until high RPM's until I reached 65...this thing passed a slower moving truck like there was nothing hooked on! I am very happy with my D's perf. I was on Level 3.

btw, off topic...I saw your pic in your garage of the quint in action...nice pic! I found myself on the end of ours a week ago when a modular home plant went up...structure fires suck in 17 degree weather, don't they?
Diesel Dually 12-22-2006, 08:12 AM They do! I remember the days of riding on the actual backstep of a '63 Mack C in February running to jobs...I miss that truck!
cwq21 12-22-2006, 08:18 AM Another vote for TTT mirrors. Haven't driven a truck with the new style mirrors, so I can't comment on those but they look OK.
Diesel Dually 12-22-2006, 10:26 AM The '06 mirrors do angle up a little, but they have a phenominal view of the world behind you. I really like them.
Rttoys 12-22-2006, 11:15 AM If you want to save money, get the GM base camper mirrors. They came out with the new body style in '99, they are manual extend, manual adjustments with blind spot mirrors built in. Gm part #12495931 for the camper mirror package that gives you both mirrors for under $200. I got mine for $180 with tax a few years back. I do like my '06 mirrors better, but a bit more pricy.

Thanks! Found them for $165...
WanaDmxsub 12-22-2006, 05:03 PM When using the cruise control while towing keep and eye on your EGT's. Mine get kind of high just before a down shift.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!):h):h):h

At what point should I worry about EGT's? What's consider too high? What's the optimal temp?
thejdman04 12-24-2006, 11:52 PM I wouldnt continously run more then 1600 is plenty. Leave it in od w/tow haul mode, olnly reason to kkick out i bleive or over ride in in d is if its hunting(shifting up and down) thats awfully hard on stuff.
WanaDmxsub 12-25-2006, 01:26 AM At what point should I worry about EGT's? What's consider too high? What's the optimal temp?
I have my EGT gauge set to flash a warning at 1300 deg. When I see it flashing, I back off until it drops below 1300 deg. (When I'm towing the TT and have the family loaded in the truck) Optimal? Not sure...I'll leave that to the experts...
On the Dyno and the "occasional" traffic light, I've seen over 1800 deg (short burst).
Quick 6 Racing 12-25-2006, 02:57 AM When we do our towing (8,200lb 5th) I always set cruise, just seems like it stays in 5th gear better, and the EGT's stay at a safe level (below 1200)
In tow/ haul mode the truck stays in 4th a lot longer, sometimes feels like it's never going to shift to 5thHaul
GlenRoseFireFighter 12-26-2006, 11:53 AM you guys have been a great source of knowledge. Thank you very much. If you have anything else to had to this thread, feel free.
