The quest for HP continues with a JK do it yourself injector upgrade! These units will hopefully go a long way toward the 700 club! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

It is certainly no trivial job and the going has been slow. The Helm manual is invaluable for the job and I definitely hate the way some of these things are put together! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I don't envy any GM tech that has to do these on a regular basis. A big thanks to a certain tech that has already made this job much easier. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif

Anyway, here are a few photos and I will post more as things progress.

Let the air out the front tires it helps, you may have already done that after your first picture though. Keep us posted on the results.

Better yet, take the front tires off and set the ball joints down on a 4x4. Some old timer (my dad) taught me that.

Nice work though. Projects like this are fun when you don't "HAVE" to do them. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

a few things i seen from the forum..... if you unbolt the hood hinge where it meets the hood theres a bolt hole farther back to raise the hood up so its easier if you have to reach in over the side. and ditto taking off the tires.... if you set the front ende down it help according to a not so little bird.

Good info !

How much is a round trip ticket and hotel for the weekend from Mich to Georgia?

I'd have that figured in my Injector upgrade "bud-jet" for insurance.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

I'm sure you'll get it done.

Good Luck with the injectors Brandon. I'm sure you have some good "before" baselines both at the track and the dyno. Can't wait to see the performance increase. Keep us posted!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

BTW, how far are you from Tallahassee??

I have a dyno day coming up so the results should be interesting. These injectors are forty overs so I am hoping for about a 100 ponies from the upgrade.

I can make it to Tallahassee in about four hours.

Thanks! My dad always was a stickler for keeping it clean under the hood. I guess it rubbed off on me! I was very happy about the condition of everything under the valve covers too. I expected worse after the abuse I have heaped on it over the last 50K. Keeping to a 3500 mile oil change schedule seems to help a good deal with the soot and buildup.

Yep, all day in the garage does not win too many points with the lil' lady but at least she understands I am a diesel addict.

As far as the hours go, I would never make it because I could never do this job for what GM would pay. I think I burned those hours in the first day! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif Of course, I did have lunch and dinner breaks, I had to go buy a few things for the job and I did get interrupted several times by my real job.

Hopefully today will be a good one!

Let us know how it goes, what the results are on the dyno, and how long they take to replace. I really wanted to do mine by myself as well, but the timing was perfect for me to meet Eric and have him do them.

Did you get all new injectors, or just new nozzles? Don't know what you'll find but I didn't get any significant hp gain with the injectors when running on #2 only with programming. They did make the truck more responsive and it puts out a lot more smoke. They gained me right at 100hp with no programming. I think we are pretty much at the limit of #2 only with programming now so the injectors aren't going to help unless we have air to burn the extra fuel they are flowing.

Running the same programinning and nitrous shot before and after injectors was definitely a difference though. Gained a lot of extra hp because more fuel was available to be burned... Curious to see what you find.Edited by: sp33d

Since you have to do both sides, the whole wireing harnness will fold off to the passenger side, the ac compressor will fold off to the pass side(set it on the battery), the alternator will fold off to the drivers side(set it on the battery). Make some room to work in there. Don't worry, the wireing harnness will only plug in to the right spots, can't screw it up.

ditto on the taking the tires off and setting it down on the ball joints, much nicer to get to things, and with wheel well liners out, it may make some easier access to some of the valve cover bolts in the back and the intake tubes.

Git er done, injectors aren't too bad, hopefully you won't have to go down to the next layer, it is even more fun!

I wish my engine compartment was that clean, I don't think it can clean up now.

Good luck
Kyle

So does this job require any specialty tools? Are there any gaskets, seals, or other items that are not reusable and need to be replaced?

BMDMAX
08-01-2004, 10:33 PM
You will need the injector puller tool, lower valve cover seals, the upper valve cover sealant, the EDU banjo fitting seals and the banjo fitting seals for the injector return lines. You need an inch pound torque wrench and hex wrenches for most of the bolts. A 3/4 inch flare socket is very helpful also.

It is coming along nicely, man those injector tips look cooked when you pull them out for sure.

Man, I would be loosing my a$$ on this job. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif I would be one thin, poor GM tech. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Eric, it blows my mind that you can rock this job out in less than 8 hours! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gif

I do know that I have been going very slow and checking everything a million times. I guess I am just paranoid and I know that if I screw this up that I will have a crankcase full of fuel!

Brandon,

I sure hope no news is good news. It's been a few days, how's it going?

BMDMAX

I finished them up this evening. It was a good feeling making the last connections and getting it ready to go. The lift pump made it pretty easy to get the system primed and it actually did not take a whole lot of cranking to get it running. It started up and purred like a kitten. The truck actually seemed quieter at idle. I let it idle for about 20 minutes to get it up to temp and checked the balance rates with the Tech II, everything was in spec. I checked for leaks and everything was nice and dry.

Now for the fun part! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif Road Test! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif I could definitely feel the difference with the injectors. Ho-Lee Sheeaut, this puppy is blasting to 80 MPH in a blink of an eye and it is smoking like a freight train. I can fog a lane with ease. I can't wait to give it a good shot of the sqeeze to see what it will do. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif

It was a ton of work, I really don't know how many hours it took total but it did take a week's worth of evenings to get it done. I would do it again for the results though.

JK, these injectors are wicked! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif

Great job. I watched Eric do both my heads. It's aton of work.

How did your injector lines look going into the top of the injectors? Any corrosion? Mine were nasty.

2DAMAX: I will definitely post the results. I think they are going to be pretty good based on the SOTP meter.

Hoot: Only a couple of the lines had any appreciable amount of corrosion. I cleaned them up and re-used the lines, I don't forsee them being a problem. I think the nice Georgia weather and lack of road salt helps out that problem quite a bit. I did use some dielectric silicione on the line caps when I did the reinstall to hopefully seal them up a bit better.

I sure don't want to have to tear it apart again!

Did an oil change today, everything was normal with no fuel in the oil. I was pretty worried even with all the double checking.

It has been awhile since I have done a mod where the tranny needs to relearn it's shifts from the extra power.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

I was happy about this as well... Kinda odd that we have probably the cleanest diesel made and we want it to smoke http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif It's even better being able to put out a little or big huff of smoke from idle at a stop light... Too much fun.

I like the fact that I don't have to lug it to bilow. Just put it to the floor and lose a lane or two behind you.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Click down to a lesser setting and it runs quite clean...
