I changed my oil today with 900 miles on the odometer and while it was draining I usually will aim a bright flashlight on the oil stream. There was quite a bit of small shiny metal particles in the oil. From my experience this is normal on the first oil change of a rebuilt engine, but I don't know if these diesels are test ran at the factory and the oil changed before they are sold. Has anybody noticed metal in their first oil change and should I wait another 5000 miles to change it again?

It is always a good idea to change the oil frequently during the first few thousand miles.......
After several more oil changes if you have any concern drive the truck for 2K miles and have an oil analysis done .......most Dmax's will show high wear metals during the break-in period then they should stabilize.

Every new vehicle I have had, has had metal like you mentioned in the first few oil changes. It is normal engine break-in. Unless you see long strands or shards or large chips. Metal "dust" is normal.
