What does everyone think about Fram oil filters.. I've heard bad things about them.. I Had to go to four different places to find a good oil filter for my truck

according to cummins fram filter media has been known to come apart and plug the piston cooling jets and cause engine damage.

I had a Fram oil filter on my DMAX. 25Below zero, I started it upand watched the oil pressure guage drop, so I shut it down. Stepped out of the truck to check under the hood and slipped on the oil. No fun changing cold oil in the dark. I had to change the filter twice because I bought two for one Fram filters at Wal-Mart. Use another brane because their's are weak in the casing. I don't know about the Cummins, but the Duramax puts out very high oil pressure at start up when cold.

I only use WIX oil filters. I've personally never heard or seen anything negative about them and they are one of the best ones out there. just my $0.02

You should use Fleetguard filters. They are made by Cummins and you can't go wrong with them. You can get them at a Cummins service dealer or you can get a Fleetguard 4/2/1 kit form www.geno'sgarage.com (http://www.geno'sgarage.com) . It's well worth the money.

No thanks, I'll stick with the superior Wix Filter. That and not to mention I recently had a bad experience with Geno's. When they failed to notify my or include on my reciept that an item was on backorder. I emailed them and asked why wasn't the item shipped and I got a VERY Rude and sarcastic e-mail from "Andy Bishop". I'll never do business with that company again and if I hadn't of installed the parts I would have returned everything for a refund and went elsewhere....

I'm glad I read this. I've used a FRAm oil filter for about 4,000 miles, do you think I've done any damage? The oil pressure was always good and the oil was still a nice caramel color at 4,000 miles before I changed the oil. I'm now running ac/delco filter. They're harder to find, I had to buy one from the stealer.

I do notice now that the oil pressure is up a little bit with the ac filter, i'm not sure why?

Wow, I am glad I have joined this sight. I have always thought FRAM was the way to go. I have 63,000 on mine, and I have been using fram the whole time. Is there any other filters out there anyone might reccomend?

If you have a few extra bucks laying around, buy a new fram filter and cut the casing open...pull the filter media out...Seeing what is actually in these filters should be more than enough for you to never buy one again.....

I'd stick to Fleetguard or WIX. I've heard a lot of stories about Fram filters "self destructing" in some of the Cummins engines.

If this "copy and paste" attempt works, this will answer anything you'd ever want to know about oil filterz. http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23056
There's also debate about oil filters on the "new" Harley Davidson Twin Cam. It seems that the TC uses a fine oil filter and tons of 20w50 is being bypassed. And the TC is alot more complicated than the original ('84 up) Evolution ever was. And I own one of the very first TC's. Not a good thing...:blahblah:

i am not defending fram filters because i dont use them on my truck, but my dad's old 94 chevy c1500 with the 4.3 v6 has a 180,000 miles on it. it has always had fram filters and pennzoil 5w-30. i use acdelco from rural king or wix from napa or filters from the caseih stealer.

I have seen a Fram filter cut open. This had to be the cheapest filter that I've ever seen torn apart. They had a Wix cut open and it was a night and day difference. Wix and AC Delco are my top choices.

What about Fleetguard?!?!

If you are under factory warranty, your best bet is too use Fleetguards, this covers you in the evnt of an oil related engine failure. Stay away from Fram, absolute garbage, another marketing company spend all there moeny on ads and not the product. Steiner, the 4.3 V6 will run 300000 miles itseems with whatever iol filter you have. My brothers 94 4.3 S10 pickup just turned 350K miles, still hasnt had the valve cover off, dont burn any oil,and shows no signs of having over 50000 miles on it. It is the 200Hp CPI engine (vin W).All its ever had is Big A oil filters and 10w30,and recently wix oil filters napa oil 10w30.

As a diesel mechanic for over 10 years I have changed plenty of oil and have researched all the brands. I think brands like Fram have no buisness on a diesel engine. There main focus is gas engines. They have filters for diesels just so they keep clientele. I also heard Fram is going away. I hate Wix(Napa) filters I have installed alot of them for fleets that supply them. And after a few thousand miles on a truck they show signs of weeping and are usually really loose at time of replacement. I have gone to emergency road calls for major oil leaks due to Wix filters backing off. I think one of the best filters on the market is the Donaldson Endurance line. Even Amsoil is selling them instead of there filters for there diesel line. The Caterpillar filters you by from the Cat dealer are made by Donaldson. I used to work for Cummins and I like the Fleetguards also. Mobil makes a good filter. One thing you will notice when you compare filters is price. A good filter will cost more then a cheap one. This has to do with the filter media used. Compare the price of Fram filter to the Mobil used in the same application at least double. One thing I would not skimp on is oil filtration especially with a egr equipped engine. The filter technology that is now avalible in the Donaldson Endurance line cam out of some of the r&d during the Gulf war for the Abrams tank due to the fine sandy environment. Dont take my word for it. The truth is out there...

I bought my truck new and had the first couple of oil changes done at the dealer. After that I did my own. I have always thought that Fram was a good filter, so I used them. I had my truck in because of a LP failure and at that time was told that they noticed I had a Fram oil filter. I was shown the TSB that states the filter can break down causing particles to plug the oil port in the piston. It stated these filters could void wty.and weren't recommended. It also had a list of recommended filters. I know I have a copy of that TSB filed away...have to find it! I also know that Fram is a very reputable company and says they will stand behind their product. I personally took the easy route and used a"wix" filter which was about the same $ and one of the filters that was on the ok list. It was also the brand that originally came with the Cummins in my truck. I also use a by-pass filtration system which also runs the oil through a much finer second filter. Well worth the $ and gives me piece of mind knowing this.http://forum.bd-power.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Fram filters are mostly cardboard, I've always used wix filters, so has my dad, and recently departed Granddad. My 92 12v has 254,000 miles on it ran strictly on wix filters. Just food for thought, I mean Fleetguard is good, but its nice to know that you have an alternative besides a WAL-MART special.

For a mere $9.72 from the dealer, I've always used Mopar/Fleetgard. If there's a problem, they surely can't blame their own filter. Same thing with the fuel filter. I also use Rotella T. All Mopar approved stuff. I hardly see the value in saving a few bucks in a $40K truck.

Purolator Premium 1, Wix, Napa Gold (by Wix), and Mobil 1 (by Champion) are my choice for filters. I haven't read anything negative about Bosch either. I think Champion makes them. Champion makes a lot of filters, but most are not up to par with those aboe. Fram and AC Delco use to be good filters, but their quality has slipped per all of the test reports that I have read.

PEOPLE!!! Do your home work WIX is JUNK! If you hate your tuck run Wix or Fram. Stop looking at the Napa displayes of the Wix vs Fram. Did you ever notice one has more pleates then the other but, they are the same color? Same filter media ones junk and the other is on the border of crap. NAPA GOLD = PORE SAPS MONEY IN NAPA's POCKET.

I personaly run Fleetguard, they are Cummins approved, and have worked well

for me. As for the Wix filters, I haven't heard anything bad about them. My Dad

runs Wix and Fleetgaurd on all of his tractors on the farm, and we have seen

8,000 hours+ with no trouble from these filters.:D Just my $.02

:ro) Cummins has nothing to do with WIX. Call;1-800-DIESELS and talk to the techs. Ask them which filter is approved. They will tell you Fleetguard nothing else. As to what filter came on your (Dodge) truck new it would say Mopar. Why? Because, engines bought by Mopar have no Cummins factory warranty from Cummins. As far as Cummins is conserned you can run what ever you want when they are out of the warranty loop. If your application is non automotive (industrial) then it was speced with a filter. In that case it would still be a Fleetguard unless the OEM decided to warranty the engine themselves. Filters are not as simple as just screw one on and go. Filters are almost more important then the quality of oil you use. after you do the research you will most likly switching brands.Im not trying to start a war on filters. Filters don't get looked at close enough. Everbody looks at oil too much, not to say thats a bad thing.

Uh, voodoo...the color of fram's media is a very light tan....wix is at least 4 shades darker.......Out of curiousity, where are you getting your information?
Is this just a personal gripe or what?
I agree that fleetguard is oe spec on cummins motors....has been for a long time...

Obviously "Voodoo Trucker" you didn't read what I said in my post!! "My Cummins came "NEW" with a WIX!!...I didn't say "MOPAR"!!!... I'm not really interested in what you personally want to believe!! You are entitled to your opinions of which filter you like or dislike...and whether you like it or not...there are some things that all your writing and opinions can't change.... the fact that a WIX came with my "NEW" Cummins!!

P.S. Like I said in my earlier post "I'm not trying to get into a "he said..she said"..believe what you want..you'll feel better for it at the end of the day!
