: New Duramax
dguill 07-30-2004, 03:35 PM Hey guys, fiirst just wanted to say great Forum, have learned alot in just a few minutes, I guess the question I have is I bought an 04 with the LB7 engine, which i find is the old engine, should I have done my homework before I bought instead of after the fact. it only has 319 miles on it and of course everything is fine now but what does the future have in store. Any comments. Thanks
BMDMAX 07-30-2004, 04:14 PM At the moment, more power than the LLY. The LB7 may actually always make more power than the LLY but no one really knows for sure.
There are tons of go-fast goodies for the LB7 and it has less emissions junk on it. I'd be pretty happy with an 04 LB7......
Enjoy! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Max Power 07-30-2004, 04:15 PM You can't go wrong with the LB7. I've had both and I prefer the LB7 over the LLY in many ways.

Curious why do you prefer the LB7 over the LLY ?? Didn't they make a lot of improvement to the cylinder head design and the fuel system, plus i think it uses and compter that is twice as fast as the LB7.
BMDMAX 07-30-2004, 05:23 PM The "improvements" to the LLY were to meet more stringent emission requirements from the Federales and not much else. The injectors are easier to service but that is a problem that should have never happened. Other than that, the fuel system is the same except for a bigger filter.
The VVT and cooled EGR I think will limit the LLY's ability to make power compared to the LB7 but that is just my opinion.
As far as the computer goes it just gets confused twice as fast as it did before! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
TazMan 07-30-2004, 08:12 PM Doesn't the LLY have a catalitic converter? I asked and my LB7 does not.
deadfurrow 07-30-2004, 10:37 PM I'm beginning to think more & more that I'm glad I bought an '04 LB7 instead of waiting for the LLY. (Even though my fed-emission LB7 had a cat!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif) There are advantages to both of them. You probably got a pretty good deal on your LB7, so relax, & enjoy it. If you think you're missing out on the extra 70 ft/lbs of the LLY, there are plenty of ways to fix it.
Mike L. 07-30-2004, 10:38 PM LB7 has a better toy store than an LLY. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif When I went Duramax shopping in Nov. '03 I had every intension of getting an LB7; did not want LLY. I made the right choice. Nothing wrong with the LLY, it's all about the toy store. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

StraitDiesel 07-31-2004, 10:53 AM dguill,
I had the same problem as you when I first bought my truck. I had no idea there was an LB7 or LLY. I just knew it was a diesel... since I became a member at this site I have learned more than I thought I ever would... back to the topic, I have an LB7 and was upset when I first bought the truck, because I thought I got the LLY. I am now very, very happy with my LB7, very solid. I juiced it and it runs like a top. I think you will be very happy with your LB7.

The exact thing happened to me, except I didn't know they made changes until here recently, and I am glad I lucked out and got the LB7.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif I have been reading that the new LLY owners are really unhappy with their 9 mpg towinghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif. I would be too. I am not saying mine is better than theirs just because I own one, I am just very http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif with my LB7 and to each his own.
Don't fret too much, there are plenty of positives in what you own. Edited by: dmaxfan

I have a 2002 LB7. I think that I'm doing good if I get 9 MPG towing my 10,000 fifth wheel. Typically it's between 8.5 and 9.5... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

dmaxfan 08-01-2004, 09:00 AM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif Alot of new LLY owners have had the LB7 before, and they say they can tell a huge difference in MPG. I haven't ever towed anything that heavy, the most I have ever towed is 8000 lbs. I can't remember exactly what I got, but I know it wasn't any where near 8.5-9.5 mpg.
B_Alaska 08-04-2004, 01:19 PM I get 20-21 hwy, 14 towing a 7000lb boat, and 17-18 in town driving. The wifes Ford Exploder get worse mileage then the new/used 2002 Duramax. I am happy with my LB7 so far. Just like most equipment, the early models tend to be the best for some reason. Polaris did that with their snowmobiles, I purchased a 2002 800 RMK and every year since, they have decreased the power and economy, who knows why.
The LLY is supposed to be creating more power, so I would expect better mileage as well.Edited by: B_Alaska
