what are the issues in replacing an electronic injector pump with a mechanical pump

thanks

You need a PCM and all the electronic sensors. Stay with the electronic pump it is easier in the short run and maybe even the long run. Just MNSHO.

Doesn't really sound like the electronic IP is that bad to me. It's just 95% of the time people mis-diagnose a PMD problem with a faulty IP.

I'd go further than that and say a lot of IPs (PMD included) get misdiagnosed because of fuel, filter and electrical problems on the truck. I had a truck come back just today with my rebuilt DS on it, customer complaining stalling, black smoke and low power. Turns out, he had a faulty OPS, very weak lift pump, some bad wiring and needed air and fuel filters changed and now, the truck runs like new. Basic vehicle maintainence, and simple checks will solve a lot of the complaints people have with these trucks.

What are you hoping to gain from changing to mechanical injection? Edited by: Texas Diesel Guy

Technology needs to flow forward.
If you were putting a 6.5 block into a swampbuggy a mechanical makes since.
Converting a truck setup for EFI to mechanical is giving up.
This system isn't impossible to "know".
Just a pain sometimes.

To answer the original question -

DB2-4911 inj pump for 6.5l

8 injector lines - they are longer, with smaller threaded couplings at inj pump

Throttle cable - hole is already punched in firewall.

Accel pedal assy, direct bolt-in

Throttle Position Sensor for the mech pump - controls the auto trans.

TCM for the '91-'93 auto trans 4L60E or 4L80E

Wiring harness for that series transmission - it is separate from the engine harness.

Cruise assy from '91-93, self-contained, works from the Vehicle Speed Sensor, as does the speedo\inst cluster.

Really good story - to tell the State Inspectors at Vehicle Inspection time.......

GMCTD, I assume that if you're running a manual tranny, you wouldn't need the TPS or TCM or the wiring harness for tranny. Or is the manual transmission electronically hooked up as well?

Would the cruise work on a manual tranny?

Had heard, maybe a rumour, that the military hummers were 6.5s with mechanical injection. Anyone know if this is the case?

And lastly, is the vacuum to the wastegate electronically controlled?

Would there be some adapting to do on the wastegate as well?

Perhaps rather than just being a step backwards, going mechanical would be a step towards reliability for my truck anyway...

My cruise on my 93 5spd works off a module under the hood, has a throttle cable going to it. Abs has it's own controller too.

I was welding on the bumper awhile back and now niether works. whoops. Miss that ABS on rain soaked streets, twice i've had to run up on the shoulder of the road because I couldn't stop the truck!

RC - could use the mech wastegate controller like the '93 trucks, or get an aftermarket adjustable spring unit, as from Heath Diesel.

It is adjstable from 7psi to 15psi Boost, in two ranges, depending on the user-installed spring.

Your speedo is electronic, driven off an electronic module that has separate outputs for speedo, auto trans, cruise and ABS braking.

Manual trans trucks will not have the harness wiring connections for the elect auto trans, else is same.

Hummers had mech FI until recently, when they got the DS4 EFI systems.
