I have just replaced both batteries in the 03 d/a (see sig)with the winter coming on. The new batteries have both the side mount and the top mount. While I have only jump started another vech. once or twice I opened the door on the cover of the hot/ground and used that as designed to hook the jumper cables up.
Since the new batts. also have the top post can I now use those to jump start another vech WHEN I HAVE TOO. If so, which battery, the one closest to the front grill or does it not matter? And is it correct that it is very dangerous to use this to jump start another due to computer ect.

I do not think that it really matter what battery you use. I have always used the red door cover to jump though.

There is a positive post right by your power steering reservior. That would be the easiest to use.

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure that since I also have top posts on these batteries that are not being used I can use those when I have to jump. That there is no advantage to opening that red door and using that contact.

The safe place to hook up to to keep sparks away from the battery. Batteries emit some type of gas which could be bad....

Use any place you want to - whichever one is more convenient for you. All of the B+ locations are essentially the same thing since they're all hooked together, anyways.

Main thing the post gets you is away from the batteries. Batteries that are being either charged or discharged rapidly have a tendancy to devolop hydrogen gas. Combine that with a spark from the jumper cables and you have the recipe for a big boom under the hood of your truck.

What always blew my mind was why the hell they put a Ground post within an inch from that +12v box. I would ground to that post and go to the battery for positive.

Might just be coincidence that it happened this way, but a friend of mine was jump starting his backhoe in his new '06 connecting direct to the battery (not sure which one) and fried the TCM:eek:

idk why the 12v source and the ground are so damn close? I was connecting an amp cable and barely touched the ground (not paying attention:rolleyes: ) and the wrech fell on the engine block and fused wrech together, no more ratcheting! GM is trying to kill us, thats all:D LOL.
