: tire size?
jollyrogr 12-15-2006, 10:02 PM Hi, its my first post here. I just got an 04 silverado ext cab duramax (LLY) with 47k miles on her and she needs new footwear.
I'm considering cooper discoverer ATR tires for my truck and was planning on getting the original size 245/75/16 but everyone on here seems to get 265/75/16's.
Can you guys tell me why? What are the pro's and con's of getting the 265's vs the original 245's. Thanks
66flh 12-15-2006, 10:16 PM Better ride,more ground clearance,better looking too!
Unit453 12-15-2006, 10:18 PM 245's look like donuts on these trucks. I prefer 285's.
dirtymax70 12-15-2006, 10:20 PM POST 100! and better looks and ride, but you truck was built to run the 245's
jollyrogr 12-15-2006, 10:42 PM Looks like the 265's are an inch bigger diameter...so the speedo would be off a little.

Actually, it's been posted here that 265 tires correct the speedometer error and that has been verified with GPS speed measurements.

LOL. I'll check the stock 245's tomorrow with my GPS.

I checked my speedo today with GPS and with the stock 245's on the speedo reads about 1.5 to 2 MPH high...so I guess with 265's it should be pretty much nuts on.

:agreed:
Designated Dave 12-17-2006, 12:34 AM I run 265's now but my next set will be 285's mainly for looks.. Just remember if you do much towing to look for the load range e tires.

Not true, actually the 265s make the truck 2.5 mph or so faster than the speedo. There are posts about this floating around. It could be the GPS units also.
Getting back the to original question. The 265s look tougher on the these trucks. BUT! Our stock wheels are only 6.5" wide making the 265s and not to mention the 285s too big. Some members have actually had shops refuse the work because of this issue. This does not mean it can not be done....I run the 265s and have friends with 285s(post trim modifications). The 265s require 7"-8" wide wheel and the 285s I think are 7.5"-9" wheels.
Hope this helps.
big block 67 12-17-2006, 07:16 PM I have your solution and I am going to post a thread about this after I help you. I have an 02 Seirra 2500 HD and this is the best tire for your truck in my opinion. 255/85 - 16. I run this size on my truck and they look and work GREAT. I don't remember the manufacturer of this tire but is is called a Ridge Runner.Look into this tire before you buy a 265 it is taller and meaner for your truck.
big block 67 12-17-2006, 07:25 PM I run a different tire on my 02 Seirrs 2500 Hd.It is 4" taller that the piss ant 245. Buy this tire and you WILL smile.....Ridge Runner 255/85-16. Period :)
NoWake200 12-17-2006, 07:33 PM Any pictures? I have read about guys going with this size but never seen them in person.
big block 67 12-17-2006, 07:58 PM Sorry, didn't get around to posting pics of my truck yet. Will do that soon.

:exactly:
With the stock tires, there is a slight speed error. The 265 tires will cause the speedometer to read more accurately, easily verifiable with a GPS unit.

jollyrogr, I have two different types of tires that are the same size.
The picture at the sea fence are Nittos, the others are of the Coopers. Yes, they are 265s. Real happy with the Coopers tread and size.
Hope this helps.
