: Cyclical squeaking noise from rear of truck

I just bought a used '03 Sierra 2500HD DMAX. After a few days it started to develop a squeak that sounds like it somes from the rear of the truck. It does it when idleing to a stop at low speeds, and when taking off, it speeds up as the truck speeds up. However, when I put the truck in Nuetral and rev the motor it does not do it, so it would appear it isnt the motor. After reading through many posts, I decided to check the rear springs, and all the rubber disks (not sure of the name) are in place. ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED>

Thanks

Brian

My money is on your rear U-Joint. It has probably dried out. My 01 did the same thing. I pulled my driveshaft and had to replace it. When I banged the old one out, it was dry as a bone. Pick one up at AutoZone. There not that expensive, unless you think you can get the original one out to pop the caps off them to lube them. I had to bang mine out cause it was rusted in there, so the damage during removal was gonna happen no matter what. Let us know what happens. Hope that helps.

I havent noticed it when backing up, but thats not to say it doesnt happen. I also stood on my hitch and bounced the rear end up and down and it didnt make any noise. so I would tend to think it is in the drive train behind the engine somewhere (as it does not do it when revving the engine in neutral)... If it is the U joint is that something I should worry about driving around on till monday (appt. to take truck in to have looked at)?

THX in advance

No, you should be able to wait till Monday. I drove a few weeks like that.

Yep, a u-joint. Mine did the same thing.

It turns out that it indeed was the U-Joint. Took it to the dealership and they wanted $180+. I ended up taking it to my mechanic and he did it for $120+, but had to put in one for an 02' (mines adn 03') seems as though (understandibly so) that a u-joint shouldnt go bad in less than a couple years and 36000 mi. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
