: Transmission Slipping -- Attention Eric
Bowhunter 07-28-2004, 03:17 PM I'm fortunate to have a company truck to drive so there are times that my Duramax may not get out of the garage for 4 or 5 days. When it sits for a few days with out being driven the transmission doesn't want to engage when put into reverse to back out of the garage. The truck will very gently begin to back up if you give it a little gas but nothing like it should. After it runs for 15-20 seconds it's fine. Is there a pump or something that might be loosing prime due to it sitting for extended periods of time? Has anyone else experienced this?Edited by: Bowhunter
dmaxalliTech 07-28-2004, 03:54 PM very common condition, and I assume its not an 04 like whats listed in your sig. The converter drain back springs dont hold the fluid in and you have to wait for the converter to fill with fluid again. After sitting for extended period, it all drains back to pan. There is a tsb for it and also the Transgo kit addresses it.
Trans needs to be removed to correct, or you could just let it run for a bit before moving.

No it's an 04. Is it a problem they supposedly fixed before that year model? It's not that big of a deal, just wanted to make sure I wasn't setting myself up for something major to happen later on.
Maxter 07-28-2004, 09:18 PM This guy:

Seems to have the same problem with a 04.
The transgo kit fixes that along with other very important things. If they are going to pull the tranny out on waranty, you might as well use that freebe to install the transgo kit http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
steve stiller 07-28-2004, 11:40 PM never had the problem on my 04 until my suncoast stage 3 kithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif. not as severe as bowhunter, only 3-5 seconds than a heavy engage. i use my truck everyday for work and you never know when it may happen.
dmaxalliTech 07-29-2004, 08:34 AM Steve, thats not right, something just aint right with that....
As far as the drainback issue, that should have been corrected with the 04 MY
steve stiller 07-29-2004, 10:40 PM eric, i don't mind as long as it's not hurting anything. could it be one of the valves you sanded? i got to agree with you somethings wrong. everytime i stand on it when it shifts to second it spins the tires http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif no chirp just some smoke off the pavement!
Bowhunter 08-27-2004, 06:35 PM Eric, I picked up my truck from the dealership today after having it in for this "transmission not engaging after sitting for extended period" problem. When I dropped it off I told the service advisor what you had suggested might be the problem, "converter drain back springs." Here is what was printed on the invoice:
K6557 Wiring Harness and/or Solenoid TCC PWM
Solenoid Replaced
107 WPP4 1.30
1 8683187 Valve
FC: 6C
Part # 8683187
OPCODE K6557
Replaced TCC PWM Solenoid Case # 7608571 Called GM Was Told To Replace TCC PWM Solenoid
Can you interpret this for me and let me know what it is they replaced and if you think this will solve the problem? Thank you for your expertise.Edited by: Bowhunter
rvarner 08-27-2004, 07:58 PM I have the same problem and it's happened since day one. If I drive it every two or three days, it doesn't happen. If I let it sit for an extended period on time, it will not back out of the garage without shutting off and retrying in a minute or so. Did this with less than 5000 mi on the unit. I am very reluctant to have my local dealer service the transmission and was wondering if I could take it to an Allison dealer for service? Anybody done this?
Richard
dmaxalliTech 08-27-2004, 10:20 PM Bowhunter, they replaced the TCC solonoid, or in Allison terms, the "f" ( I think) solonoid. I have got no freakin idea why they would have done this for your condition, but i would lean heavy on this problem reoccuring. I see they do have a TAC case open on it. Confused why they didnt see this coming, but maybe they dont think the 04's need the springs?
I will research this some......
Bowhunter 08-28-2004, 01:01 PM Eric, I am going to let it sit for the weekend and see what happens. Will let you know.
I'm sure that I echo the thoughts of the majority on this forum. Eric, you are a huge asset to The Diesel Place community. Thank you for making yourself available to us. Your knowledge is invaluable!!
Bowhunter 08-31-2004, 09:45 AM Eric,
You were right. Replacing TCC solenoid did absolutly nothing. My truck sat in the garage Sunday and Monday, went to drive it this morning and same thing happened. Put it in reverse and it just sat there. Taking it back to the stealership this morning.
Will keep you posted.
dmaxalliTech 08-31-2004, 10:32 AM Refer them to tsb 03-07-30-031c:
Transmission Leaks, Slips, Vehicle Will Not Move (Replace Rear Extension Housing, Change Torque Covnertor Relief Spring/Lube Regulator Spring
In the tsb, its noted:
The converter relief and lube regulator springs are being changed to reduce the possibility of setting multiple DTCs or experiencing a delayed engagement on the first start-up after sitting unused for an extended period of time

Bowhunter 08-31-2004, 03:51 PM Droped my truck off this morning and just e-mailed the Asst. Service Mgr. the TSB info you just gave. We will see what happens. Thanks for babysitting this one with me.
Bowhunter 09-02-2004, 05:29 PM Well after two days I got the inevitable "We can't get it to duplicate the problem..." phone call. They said that this TSB only applies to the transmission not engaging when being put into drive after sitting for extended periods of time. What a JOKE. Per GM, they are hooking up a "Snap-shot" device to it inorder to record the problem when it happens. Pick it up in the morning. This smells like the beginning of my 6.0 Power Stroke nightmare all over again. I lived with a "Snap-shot" in my Power Choke off and on for a month. Will this device record transmission problems aswell? Edited by: Bowhunter
dmaxalliTech 09-02-2004, 10:20 PM Joke is right. Did they bother to check it for codes? If its possible, let them keep the truck for a week or over the long weekend, then show up when they go out and try it after sitting, be there when they do so that if it acts up, your can witness it and they cant say it didnt... If the truck is broke for crying out loud, they need to fix it
BH in AZ 09-04-2004, 04:42 AM Bowhunter: When I was at the Allison dealer to pick up a filter a few weeks ago, the parts counter guy told me that GM will now allow them (an Allison dealer) to do warranty repairs on the Chevy/GMC Allison transmissions directly, without first going through a dealership.
You might want to give your local Dallas Allison service manager a call to see if they will be more accomodating on warranty repairs than your dealer seems to be. To bad Eric is so far away for many of us.
Bowhunter 09-06-2004, 06:31 PM Thanks BH. I will check in to that tomorrow. I get soooo tired of playing these STUPID warranty games with the dealers.
