: Belt squeek? check this out...
maynard9089 07-28-2004, 03:08 PM I have had my truck in twice for a noisy belt so far. The first time they replaced the belt but the noise reappeared two days later. Second time around they replaced the idler arm pullys (both). After a month and no more noise I figured the problem was solved. My service manager called today and said he needs my truck because GM has sent him a new power steering bracket. They told him that the one on my truck was manufactured wrong and is not keeping the belt aligned. I know many of you have also replaced belts and pulleys so you may want to look in to this.
dmaxhd 07-28-2004, 03:49 PM Did your belt squeek constantly or just when you shut it off? My belt only squeeks when I shut it off constantly, will this fix that?
txche1 07-28-2004, 04:02 PM Mine squeeks too... every time i turn it off.
cbmkr 07-28-2004, 06:52 PM squeak may not be the belt.we thought this but replaced an idler pulley and same squeak comes and goes. try removing the belt. we found that the squeak was still present. further checking found that the gear driven water pump was bad. 11k miles no leaks just bearing noise.
4500/LLY 07-28-2004, 07:03 PM Belts squeak when most diesels are shut down because the compression stops the engine right now.The belt will skip on the pulleys because of it's momentum...JB.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif Edited by: 4500/LLY
JUSTIFIED HD 07-28-2004, 07:26 PM Mine squeeks from time to time. When it does it sounds like belt chirping, comes and goes... When I want to take it to the dealer it quits sqeeking. I wonder if this bracket is problem
maynard9089 07-28-2004, 08:49 PM Mine squeeks at shut down as well. That wasn't what I was concerned with though. The squeek I complained about was from the belts and idler arm pulleys. It has gone away completely since they were replaced. Appearantly though GM has become aware of a problem with the bracket for the power steering. This was something GM initiated on their own not me or the dealership. My pulleys were wearing unevenly and was really obvious by the paint wear. I still have the squeek at shut down but Im not concered with that because I expect that.
wsucowboy 07-29-2004, 01:03 AM do you know if there is a TSB out on this or not? I just had mine into the shop and they replaced the belt, when i picked it up and started it right away it started squeaking again, time to take it back, I only have 2000 miles left on my warrantyhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif.
yitsock 07-29-2004, 11:20 AM Mine is making more of a tick from the belt? Maybe it's just starting to squeak a little? Anyone else getting just a small ticking from the belt?
2Blue 07-29-2004, 11:37 AM Hey maynard9089,
Mine belt squeaks constantly when running. Is that the problem you had?
Did you get any resistance when you took it in for service?

maynard9089 07-29-2004, 04:15 PM wsucowboy- I am not sure whether or not there is a TSB for this or not. I will try and find out Tuesday when my truck is in to have it installed.
yitsock- Mine also was making a ticking noise as well as the squeek. It too has disappeared with the replacement of the belt and pulleys. GM seems to think the squeek will return unless this bracket is replaced.
2Blue- Yup! Mine got a little louder every day and was most noticable when it was warmer outside.
BlueSteelr 09-11-2004, 10:09 PM Mine has a belt squeek problem and I too have had it in the shop. They put a new belt and tensioner on it. It fixed the problem for about a week and then squeek came back. Initially squeek was only when engine was cold after it warmed up it went away. But now it squeeks when its warm also. Is that what yours was doing? Do you think that a new power steering bracket will fix this?
cbmkr 09-12-2004, 03:25 PM belt squeak no . dealer tech is pulling water pumps ,bearing noise sounds like the belt or idler. just drop the belt ,the pump is gear driven that fixes the problem
BlueSteelr 09-12-2004, 04:56 PM cbmkr
Do you mean that the belt dosen't drive the water pump. It is gear driven internally? Do you think its the water pump? As a test, I have squirted soapy water on the belts and the noise went away. The belt and idler has been replaced, it fixed it for about a week or two, then the noise came back. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
maynard9089 09-12-2004, 07:45 PM The Duramax Quality Manager assigned by GM to work on my truck requested the dealer to replace the bracket due to a known problem. According to him there was a bad batch that were improperly milled and was causing the belt squeek. For what its worth I would have them look into replacing that first. Mine hasn't repeated the problem since and its been a couple of months and at least 6K miles.
Forced Induction 09-13-2004, 07:49 AM I had a similar problem. Belt would squeak periodically, then it started continuously for 2weeks. Sprayed a touch of oil on the back side while running to prove it was the belt, it was. Squeak came right back. Finally got my Gatorback belt in (took almost a month), installed it and now I have NO squeak on shut down or any other time!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif It has only been on for about two weeks, but so far so good! This worked for me.
I know this is the LLY forum, and the bracket problem probably doesn't pertain to me, but I wanted to share my belt experience since this is a common issue.

redneck45 09-13-2004, 08:15 AM Mine just started at around 12k miles, sqeeling sound at idle, anything but idle speed you can't hear it--it this the same thing you guys are talking about?
maynard9089 09-13-2004, 03:49 PM Thats what mine was doing. They replaced the belt first and the noise was gone for 2 days or so. Next they replaced the idler arm pulleys and the noise was completely gone. GM chose to replace the bracket after they investigated my vehicle history to diagnose a rough idle situation. I had assumed the problem was fixed with the pulley's because the squeek had been gone for several weeks but the GM engineer knew of this problem and said it would come back if not corrected.
BlueSteelr 09-13-2004, 11:42 PM Went to the dealer today, they ordered a new power steering bracket. It will be in thursday or friday. Will post my findings. Thanks for the help.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Hey, Forced Induction:
Where did you get the gatorback belt? I called goodyear and they said the gatorback would not be available for several months for the LLY motor. Do you have the LLY or LB7?
Forced Induction 09-17-2004, 07:27 AM Doug, I have an 02 LB7. They listed the belt on the web site, but the goodyear dealer near me had no such belt listed. They said they had the belt made, but I doubt that. I don't know why the belt would be much different for the LLY. You could always get the stock numbers and convert them to length and get a gatorback like that also.
Good luck, it took me a long while for my belt, but so far so good!

BlueSteelr 09-23-2004, 10:35 PM Got new a/c - powersteering bracket installed tuesday. So far no belt squeek noise. May be to early to say for sure. I think its fixed though. Thanx to all for your help.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Mackin 09-24-2004, 05:53 AM The Goodyear Gatorback is a squeak free belt shut down belt. I can supply Part# if necessary for 105 amp single Alt.

Unit453 09-24-2004, 03:08 PM Mine squeaks when shut down. 12000 miles and kickin. Its done it since mile 4. Every diesel I've ever heard does this and I assumed its normal.
Burner 09-24-2004, 03:39 PM Mac, what if you have the bigger (147 amp..I think) amp? Do you have those numbers? Do they work wet? I've had some serious "slipping" problems when the belt gets wet.
Tanks,

Mackin 09-24-2004, 03:45 PM Don't know ,Don't know.
