: GM Remanufactured Alternators?

I went to the stealer to see about replacing my 105 amp alternator with a "new" 145 amp or larger unit. When you need to charge and maintain 4 batteries, the 105 amp is not enough to do the job. I had dual alts on my '03 and I don't want to go that route this time. According to my stealer's parts dept manager, GM only sells genuine GM "remanufactured" alternators. In other words, a brand new alternator is not available. Is this true?

Does anyone know of a high output after market (new) alternator that is plug 'n play compatible (no warranty issues) with an '04 LB7 Sierra or Silverado? Thanks!

The GM units are remans. They are fine.

I won't dispute the fact that you've probably seen more successfully remanufactured alternators than I have but what about the following questions:

1. Does GM always replace both bearings in the reman alternators?
2. Do they always re-surface or replace the slip rings?
3. Do they always replace the brushes?
4. Are the stator windings checked for heat or mechanical damage?
5. Are the rotors checked for proper mechanical balance?
6. Are the rectifier/regulator electronics always replaced?

The average GM parts manager or service tech, who wants to sell you a reman alternator, can't answer most of these questions. This is why "new" is always better than reman IMO. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

You can't buy a new alternator no matter what? That sounds odd. What if my brand new truck with 1000 miles had a faulty alternator? Reman?

The parts manager at my stealer told me that every alternator they sell/replace is reman. He also told me that if my OEM 6 disk CD changer needed to be replaced, it would be replaced by GM with a reman/reconditioned (used! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif ) unit. It doesn't matter if your truck is one day old or 6 months old, you get reman electronics (alternators and CD changers) on warranty.

In some ways you might be better with remans. The remans will be hand made and inspected. The new ones would be mass manufactured and probably not very good QC. Of course I still don't think its right.

We use all ACDelco reman alternators at work and rarely have a problem with them.

You will get a reman unit for alot more then you think, transmissions, most engines, starters, radios, dash clusters, spark plugs, alternators, most radio equipment, ie, amps.

I dont know the extent of the reman process, but I do know that if you were to purchase a alternator and have it isntalled at the dealer, it should come with a lifetime warranty. Does not apply for OTC purchases

I know nothing about these alternators, having stumble into this site few weeks back. But you may inquire.

Speaking of Alternators...Is the 2nd Alternator on the '05 LLY's Plug and Play. I see the mount for it and I suppose the belt would need to be changed but is it possible to mount it and just plug it into the harness and go?

Thanks in advance.
