Hi Group. Just bought my truck a few months ago. This is my first diesel. After reading several posts on the diesel and some of the problems mention so far, I was wondering if I should purchase the extended warranty plan that GM is offering??? Is it a good investment or a waste of money??? Any comments are welcome. Thanks!!!

I am in the same boat. I never thought of purchasing service contracts on any new car, but with all the computers in them know it's hard not too.

I think some people are getting caught up in the focusing effect a forum has. You hear from a vocal few that have problems, you dont hear from those who never have a problem. I think if you were to look at the ratio of units sold vs. those here at DP posting problems- Id venture that it would be a very small ratio.

Go to a Ford BBS, Dodge BBS, Toyota BBS, etc, etc, etc, you are going to always see those having problems. I think by nature a BBS is about that kind of information sharing, but doesnt represent the whole accurately.

ANY brand regardless WILL HAVE problems- these are electric, electro-mechanical, mechanical machines- they will ALWAYS have problems.

Have to agree....if it's a machine with a bunch of computers attached - it's gonna have a problem. But, the money spent on an extended warranty can go a long way on repairs.

I'm in the same boat with the 2005 on order and have decided against an extended warranty. To me it's like a lottery (no offense to you gamblers) but casinos and extended warranties exist to make the company money. A well know consumer reports magazine always has a good report on extended's and recommends against them in most purchases.

Just joined this forum today and also traded my 2000 Silverado 6.0 4WD for a new 2004 2500 D/A LT, SB, 2WD which I will pick up Friday. Have a warranty on the 2000 and never needed to use it. Traded it with 24,000 miles on the odometer. I'm not getting the extended warranty with my new vehicle. Agree that that money can be used for future repairs. Edited by: camper

I went with the warranty - I think it was like $1,300.00. The way I look at it a computer or A/C component, or ??? going bad will eat that up pretty quick.

You see the prices these stealers are getting now a days, eating up $1,300.00 is a snack.

I havent got all of it figured out yet, but in my new 2004's warrenty manual, it appears that most of the electronics are covered way past the 3/36 warrenty. as soon as I figure out what some of the components are that are listed, I will know more, but it appears that most of them are covered for a considerable amount of time and milage if their failure will affect emmissions and most of the major cost items (ECM, etc.) are listed.

Look into third party, works like health insurance. In fact some of the stuff the dealer tries to sells are not through GM or Ford, there third-party. Our Honda dealer owned the third party provider they were trying to sell us. As most things, you get a better deal with a little good o'll American competition. I looked into them heavily with my jeeps, but decided I would void most of it as soon as I got the cash to lift and what not.

and looked into them when we got my wife’s Honda, but I decided I did not need because it was after all a Honda.

They seam better for the same money, or the same for less money. Just do a goggle. And more over, you can pay for it after you take delivery so you aren't tempted to finance, that 1k cost a lot more when you make payments on it.

I went with the factory extended warrenty. Bumber to bumber for 9 years 100,000. Covers everything but normal service for $1600.00. It also upgrades the orginal warrenty to give you a free rental while the truck is in for warrenty repair and is honered worldwide at all GM dealerships. Already used it for a oil leak I had. Truck was at the dealership for 1 week for repair and drove '04 6.0L 1500 on them. The way I figure the rental would have been $500 so I got about $1100 more to get even. It's a gamble but at prices these days the factory warrenty seems to be a pretty good deal to me. If you donot plan on keep a vehicle for a long time it's not going to be worth it but I do.

Thank you group for the comments.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif I have a few more weeks to decide before the factory quote offer expires. It will be a tough decision as I had A/C issues in my first month of ownership and from the latest posts, it looks like injector problems are slowly cropping up on some LLYs and the down time needed for repairs or waiting for parts.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

I just got the GM protection plan in the mail on my new truck. I am really not sure what you are really getting for the $1600 other than rental car insurance and wear and tear? Warranty is for 48months/72k miles. It does NOT say extended by that amount!!! Warranty starts when you buy it and ends 48months/72k miles later.

Factory warranty: 5yr/100k miles for duramax diesel, 3yr/36k bumper to bumper,6yr/100k rust through, 5yr/100k emision control(computer?).

If all you are getting is an additional 1yr/36k-2yr/48k(which ever comes first and when you buy), this is pretty expensive at $1600. Your engine is covered BEYOND that anyway. Might call it a rip-off.

After-market extended warranties are VERY risky. GM idoesn't have to accept payment directly from them, so you may have to wait reembursement. I had two friend buy a policy then discover when their vehicle broke down that the company was fly by night. They had to pay for repairs and the warranty.

Personally I would like an honest GM provided EXTENDED warranty with rental car service BUT I don't think they are selling one. Maybe at 3yr/36k a better deal will arrive in the mail?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

Doesn't the Duramax factory warranty have a $100 deductible per visit between the 3/36 and 5/100K period?? Even so, at $100 a pop you would have to make about 16 "visits" to recoup the $1600 you would spend on an extended warranty (I was a math major as you can see)http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

$100 deductable still applies under the non-extended extended warranty. So you get nothing on that either.

I had an extended warranty on my Dodge. Used it three times after the base warranty was up and probably paid for itself.

I bough the 6/75 for my DMAX. Yes it starts when you get the truck but adds advantages such as the rental when your vehicle in overnight.

There is a $100 ded after 3/36 but my dealer does not charge the ded if you bring it there for the warranty work and I have that dissapearing ded in writing.

Yes the ally tranny is close to bulletroof but it is not included in the 5/100 DMAX warranty and should you have a major tranny issue after 3/36 the extended warranty will mor than pay for itself.

Just my opinion. You know what they say about opinions!

It's definately a crap shoot either way - all I know is if I try to get another $1600 out of my wife for "that truck" I'm probably going to get a frying pan upside my head!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Just make a $1600 bet with her that she will hit you in the next ten minutes, then cough up the warranty story, collect the money and do what you want. (Hope you have good health insurance.)http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

My take on this? Well a few years back (more than a few actually) my 1991 K2500 with heavy duty tranny and such needed such tranny, along with an air cond system. If I wouldn't have bought the extended warranty I would have been sorry big time, but since I did have it I was a happy guy. Bottom line, it is a gamble, just like life insurance. But as complicated as cars/trucks are now adays and when GM (as well as all companies) subcontracts TO THE LOWEST BIDDER, is it worth the risk ? to me no.. just the same as flying in a chunk of metal way up in the air that you just know a bunch of parts were built BY THE LOWEST BIDDER.

We bought the warranty on our 2500HD 2004.5

Being in the dealer service dept and dealing with many brands of extended warranties, I think they are a wise investment. If you do go with one, I would only get the GMPP plan, which is directly from GM. Not an aftermarket. Alot of the aftermarkets may not be honered at some garages..

Its by far the easiest to work with and the most comprehensive as far as I can tell. Need encouragement to spend the money? The trans is 3k+, the a/c compressor installed is ~700.00.. rear end, transfer case, front axle, etc etc etc. I really wouldnt hesitate from buying one myself

Sell the unit and buy a new one every two or three years. You are going to see depreciation of 4 to 5 thousand bucks each year you hang on to it. So, if you trade a two year old one it's going to cost you 10 grand. Unless you are really puting on some miles, chances are at the end of two years you'll be nearing the end of your 36,000 mile warranty. Keeping the truck for 4 years will cost you 20K to trade and for that two years you are driving out of warranty and if anything hits the fan you're out the repair bucks on top of it all. Anyone selling extended service contracts will tell you they are real money makers and generally won't buy one themselves. They are a crap shoot but remember, the "house" always wins.

I dunno about the house always winning. I bought my wife a Yukon XL back in 2002. Sunroof, Autoride, the whole deal. I could have bought the extended at the time of sale but decided to wait and see how the truck held up. Well it has had some small issues and at 35,970 i decided on an additional 3 years and 36,000 miles. Price shopped a GMPP major guard warranty at 1185.00. To me it is a good piece of mind as I plan on keeping it for at least 75,000 miles. I am gonna do the same thing on my new Crew Cab. BTW, the GMPP plans can be price shopped thanks to the good ol' INTERNET...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
